Casa Carrillo La Historia El Senador Cigar - 1 Single
Date Added: Sunday 08 September, 2019
Fantastic smoke. Smoked it with my eyes first: stunning wrapper, deep chocolate colour with tight seams. The bands are eye catching and nicely designed. Not much to smell pre-light, light tobacco on the wrapper and a slight chocolate smell at the foot. Cut it straight and lit up, greeted by clouds of thick smoke. Plenty of dark chocolate and leather, with a slight sweetness. Lots of pepper in the beginning, but it switches places with the sweetness come the second third, although the pepper is still noticeable especially through the nose. Got nearly an hour out of it, found it getting acrid about half an inch before it would’ve been burning my moustache.

This was a real treat. I had smoked one about 18 months ago and couldn’t really remember what I thought, so I got another to sample. Fantastic cigar, as I’d expected. Draw was spot on, burn was razor sharp, and the flavours... I could wax lyrical about it all day. Just try one if you haven’t already, then accept the fact you need to buy a box. I can only imagine they get better with age. Not overly complex but does develop in the final third, which I wasn’t expecting given its short length. Gets a real pleasing increase in strength and flavour.

Ordered a single to sample and wish I’d ordered at least two now, because this one was a dud. I’ll try not to let it ruin my first impressions, though. It was plugged solid. A firm rolling in my palms didn’t help much, but I took it to the garden with my morning coffee and lit up regardless. On the odd occasion I managed to get some air through it there were pleasant flavours to be had, pretty smooth and light, an ideal morning smoke I think. Not much smoke, the burn was average and the ash didn’t hold well. Determined to enjoy it somehow I ended up chewing the head in a vain attempt to loosen the draw up. Slight pleasant spice on the lips. I’ve heard good things about the larger vitolas so I’ll give them a shot, and may get some more of these in the hope I get a smokable one. Not a reflection on C Gars’ service by the way; they were fantastic and I understand this happens sometimes—it’s a natural handmade product after all.

Nice looking little cigar. Easy to light and good burn all the way through, no nursing at all, no relighting. Very little to talk about in taste, kicked off with a small hint of cream which quickly changed to an earthy taste and bitter stings on the side of the tongue for the the first third. Second third no change but for a spice kick on the lips and tongue which increased to the final third before getting to hot towards the end. Would recommend a punch rather then cut. Not my cup of tea but each to their own.

Antonio Gimenez Tres Petit Corona Cigar - 1 Single

The wrapper was wrinkled and had some minor blemishes on it but above all it just looked cheap. On the plus side combustion was good and it burned evenly with a nice white ash. The draw was easy. Flavourwise it was peppery plus another indistict flavour which wasnt particularly nice. Compared to other budget contenders it has to be said that this is very poor cigar indeed. Recommended? Absolutely not.

Romeo y Julieta Petit Julietas Cigar - 1 Single

I bought this a part of a “budget Cuban “ sampler together with a travel humidor. As a lover of RyJ, it saddens me to say that I derived little or no pleasure from this example. As others have report it had a tight draw. It burned reasonably evenly and produced sufficient smoke for a petit , however, I found it harsh and without much flavour at all. It reminded me of the cheap and nasty’s smoked which I had little choice but to endure as a teenager many, many moons ago. I was tempted to stub it out after the first quarter but but thought a RyJ deserved to be given a little more time. Very much regret to say it didn’t improve and called time on it at three quarters. Fortunately it didn’t cost me much and the disappointment was tempered somewhat in that knowledge. Perhaps I happened upon a poor example but life it too short to endure a poor smoke. On a positive note, it means I can move on to better experiences. If you are tempted I sincerely hope you have a better experience.
