Peterson De Luxe Mixture Pipe Tobacco 50g Tin
Date Added: Friday 17 July, 2015
This was one of the first pre packed blends I ever bought when I was first trying out the pipe. The tin promises flavours of Vanilla, walnut and Honey, which is what first drew me to it. On opening the tin, the sweetness is very obvious, particularly the honey and vanilla, along with a distinctive chocolatey scent. I’m smoking a bowl of this as I type and I’d totally forgotten how great this blend is. It’s definitely more chocolatey than anything else (I have no idea why they wouldn’t lead with that on the tin description… everyone loves chocolate, right?!) but the honey and vanilla flavours are also present and provide a pleasant undertone to an amazing blend. I feel it’s also worth mentioning that this reminds me a little bit of the Captain Black pipe tobacco blends, which are something we often get asked for but cannot be stocked in the UK. - Calum

Peterson Connoisseurs Choice Pipe Tobacco 50g Tin
Date Added: Friday 17 July, 2015
Another sweet aromatic blend, this time with an emphasis on fruit. The smell of tropical fruit smacks you around the face as soon as you open the packet, with a sweet and tangy character. There is also a slight hint of sweet, dark rum in the background. Upon lighting, the fruit flavours make themselves known almost immediately with an orange/mandarin type of flavour, which is extremely sweet. It occasionally borders on sharp, but is pulled back from the edge by the mellow, sweet rum background note.

Peterson Irish Mixture Pipe Tobacco 050g (Tin)
Date Added: Friday 17 July, 2015
This is the last of the aromatics that I’m going to test for this blog and I’ve got to say I was a little disappointed. I’m not saying this is a bad blend, as I thoroughly enjoyed smoking several bowls of it yesterday afternoon. My main issue with it is that the whiskey taste is very indistinct and I dare say I may not have even identified it as a whiskey blend, had I been smoking it under blind testing conditions. I’m always of the opinion that even less popular/good blends still have some good characteristics (more on that soon!) and this is still the case with this blend; It is a very pleasant and light blend, that can easily be smoked all day without destroying your palate, but if you’ve gone in expecting a whiskey flavour, you may be disappointed.

Peterson Old Dublin Pipe Tobacco 050g (Tin)
Date Added: Friday 17 July, 2015
At the other end of the scale we have Old Dublin, a potent and traditional English style mixture consisting of Virginia, latakia and Oriental Tobaccos. The cold aroma may be a little off-putting for those not too well acquainted with English Mixes, as the latakia is extremely powerful, giving a crazily pungent, smoke and leather aroma. However, this blend may surprise you when lit, as it mellows out incredibly into a beautifully rounded blend. The latakia and orientals are still the main players in the taste, but they harmonise with the Virginia base to give a great, naturally sweet flavour. - Calum
