ROMEO Y JULIETA

Named after William Shakespeare’s tragic lovers, the origins of Romeo y Julieta as a Havana date back to 1875.

The brand rose to international fame during the early years of the 20th Century under the direction of Don ‘Pepin’ Rodriguez, a talented promoter who was amongst the first to recognise the power of the cigar band. During his heyday no less than 20,000 different bands were used in the production of cigars.

Winston Churchill became a devotee of the brand and following his visit to Havana in 1946, his name has not only been commemorated on a band, but it has also served to describe the marque’s most famous size – Romeo y Julieta Churchills.

Romeo y Julieta’s balanced and aromatic blend of selected filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone make it the classic medium bodied Havana.

Today Romeo y Julieta is as well known around the world as ever and offers one of the widest range of tripa larga, totalmente a mano – long filler, totally handmade – sizes of any Havana brand.

WIDE CHURCHILL

With a name like this it will come as no surprise that this is seen by many as a fine example of the modern trend toward wider ring gauge cigars. One of four Romeo y Julietas to bear the famous Churchill name this is, naturally, the one with the heaviest ring gauge.

Tasting Notes

These cigars are packed full of smooth, subtle, medium flavoured aromas which are the trademark of the Romeo y Julieta brand.

"Dark and oily in appearance, this fat robusto has a soft, spongy head. Wood, earth and floral impressions turn charry before a sweet finish hinting of cinnamon. The draw is thin, and the burn, uneven..."

Late Friday, long week at work, nice fire in the field and Glastonbury playing I'm the back ground on the day we left Europe! In celebration I could think of nothing better to try from the humidor that a R&J Churchill... First up, this is a substantial cigar, and I mean substantial. I have smoked short Churchills for a long time, but size wise this is a big step up. Flawless construction. As soon as I started to toast the foot I knew it was going to be good, and boy o boy was I right. Draw is perfect, smoke initially cold, smooth and so creamy. Burn is flawless all the way down. This cigar slowly warms up, and as it does it gets slowly stronger, but, it never looses the smooth creaminess, it just gains power, beautifully controlled power. An absolutely awesome smoke, the best R&J I've had by a mile. Up there with the Cohiba piramides and Ramon Allones specially selected at the moment. some more of these will definatley be in the humidor soon!

First impression;this is a very pretty cigar, the wrapper was smooth and flawless. The first inch was pleasant but extremely mild. From there on in the cigar delivered a more complex mix of flavours which intensified very gradually as the smoke went on. Burn was a little erratic but this didn't bother me as this is an immensly enjoyable cigar in a very mellow kind of way. Be prepared to burn your fingers, the flavours keep coming but never ever get close to being harsh. This is a real find. It's a mild cigar with hardly any pepperiness. Boy is it enjoyable. This one really put a smile on my face. I give it 6 stars. You would be crazy not to try one.

The first noticeable aspect of this cigar is the feel and weight in your hand, it really does have a heavy feel to it in an impressive way. The construction is immaculate, the feel of the cigar is compact and complete with the traditional red and white band, complimented further by the addition of a gold band. The colour is rich and upon lighting, there is an instant taste of oak. The draw is smooth, medium to full bodied and the burn is even. Flavours remain similar throughout, a smooth and creamy flavour providing an elegant and relaxing smoke. The Short Churchill is another excellent option and well worth a try, but the Wide Churchill remains one of my favourite cigars. An excellent addition to any gentleman's collection.

If you are looking for a cigar with an effortless draw, with lots and lots of taste i.e. all the flavors of Churchill's favorite cigar with a medium body throughout suitable for all then look no further, this superbly constructed and decadently looking cigar follows the current trend towards the larger ring gauge cigar and once tried i don't think you will ever return to the petit coronas, with an excellent burn and an intoxicating aroma this cigar is an indulgence from beginning to end, ideal for any special occasion or just one and half hours of sheer bliss.
