ROMEO Y JULIETA

Named after William Shakespeare’s tragic lovers, the origins of Romeo y Julieta as a Havana date back to 1875.

The brand rose to international fame during the early years of the 20th Century under the direction of Don ‘Pepin’ Rodriguez, a talented promoter who was amongst the first to recognise the power of the cigar band. During his heyday no less than 20,000 different bands were used in the production of cigars.

Winston Churchill became a devotee of the brand and following his visit to Havana in 1946, his name has not only been commemorated on a band, but it has also served to describe the marque’s most famous size – Romeo y Julieta Churchills.

Romeo y Julieta’s balanced and aromatic blend of selected filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone make it the classic medium bodied Havana.

Today Romeo y Julieta is as well known around the world as ever and offers one of the widest range of tripa larga, totalmente a mano – long filler, totally handmade – sizes of any Havana brand.

WIDE CHURCHILL

With a name like this it will come as no surprise that this is seen by many as a fine example of the modern trend toward wider ring gauge cigars. One of four Romeo y Julietas to bear the famous Churchill name this is, naturally, the one with the heaviest ring gauge.

Tasting Notes

These cigars are packed full of smooth, subtle, medium flavoured aromas which are the trademark of the Romeo y Julieta brand.

87 / 100

"Dark and oily in appearance, this fat robusto has a soft, spongy head. Wood, earth and floral impressions turn charry before a sweet finish hinting of cinnamon. The draw is thin, and the burn, uneven..."

My personal review of the Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchill Cuban cigar At first sight it is a beautifully looking decadent cigar with double banding and fantastic construction, 55 RG it is not the choice of most but the larger gauge helps th e flavours of citrus and mild pepper flow through so easily with a perfect draw mild to medium strength it is perfect for all from the beginner to the aficionado the resting cigar gives off lots of smoke so you definitely know it is still lit with an excellent burn Even if you only try this cigar once it is a fabulous experience and may become your favourite cigar, I know it is certainly mine now my previous favourite was the Hoyo Epi 2 but the Wide Churchill is sheer indulgence with a superb aroma 95/100 an excellent Christmas cigar

This was my first cigar of this size range. Unfortunately i didn't buy it here as i wanted the humidifying tube with it (which is pretty damn good)........... perhaps this will act as a recommendation for the site :) First off, it lasted WAY longer than the 45 minutes generally claimed on this cigar, near enough an hour and a half actually. It was an absolute b***h to light (use a blowtorch rather than matches for this one), and once it was lit, it burned very uneven for the first twenty minutes, which i was very careful to rotate to even out as it burned. I think there may have been something wrong with the one i bought, as the draw was fairly tight, and i would have to go nuts on it to get a decent mouthful of smoke. The huge amount of drawing it needed for some decent smoke caused it to run VERY hot. It would probably have lasted even longer if that weren't the case. Even trying as hard as i was to keep it burning properly, it went out. So i had to brush off the ash and relight it quickly while it was warm to avoid further struggle. From there on, it was lovely. I'm guessing there was something wrong with it about half way up. The smoke was beautiful all the way through (when i could get it during the first half). I made the monumental error of smoking this on an empty stomach (i know, i know), and had to sleep off a couple hours of nausea. So do not make the same mistake! Overall, very nice, but due to manufacture errors (as well as my own), i couldn't enjoy it as i probably would have.
