H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

CONNOISSEUR CORONAS MAJOR TUBED

H. Upmann was the first brand in the world to introduce the cedar lined aluminium tubes for cigars. The coronas major was not the first size to be tubed, but it has been on the UK market since 1937 and is loved by many smokers.

Tasting Notes

A small cigar, but with impressive, spicy flavours. An ideal candidate for a smoke-on-the-go thanks to the tube.

92 / 100

"Slim with an open, even draw, this corona leaves rich impressions of chestnuts, cinnamon and nutmeg on the palate. Hints of leather and earth also come in for a well-balanced smoke..."

Surprisingly mild - I actually felt that I missed out on something special. An aroma which whilst decent, would have been nicer if it were a little stronger. written by Benjamin

Hmmm, I feel the other reviews here are a little too generous. It has decent construction and a nice mild-medium aroma of woody, spicy tobacco...however after about the 1st inch it starts to burn very hot and un-even, often needing re-lighting. This is something that I hate in a cigar. However cheap a Havana may be relative to its cousins it is still pricey, and I expect not to have to put it out half way through because it has become tarry and hot. written by A. Dyer Eng
