H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

CORONAS MAJOR TUBED

H. Upmann was the first brand in the world to introduce the cedar lined aluminium tubes for cigars. The coronas major was not the first size to be tubed, but it has been on the UK market since 1937 and is loved by many smokers.

Tasting Notes

A small cigar, but with impressive, spicy flavours. An ideal candidate for a smoke-on-the-go thanks to the tube.

"Slim with an open, even draw, this corona leaves rich impressions of chestnuts, cinnamon and nutmeg on the palate. Hints of leather and earth also come in for a well-balanced smoke..."

The H. Upmann Major Coronas felt like a really classic Cuban experience for me. Right from the start, there was that signature smoothness—cedar, light spice, and a creamy texture that made it very approachable. The draw was just right, offering a steady flow of aromatic smoke. Flavor-wise, it had a nice balance of wood, earth, and a touch of nuttiness. About halfway through, I noticed a floral note along with some sweetness that kept things interesting. The burn line wasn’t perfect, but it corrected itself without much effort. What stood out most was how refined it felt—everything was in harmony, with no harshness or bitterness. Compared to some of the stronger Nicaraguan smokes I’ve tried, this felt more subtle and elegant, though still full of character. By the final third, the flavors deepened, with more earth and spice, but it never lost its smoothness. This cigar gave me a real sense of Cuban tradition and why brands like H. Upmann are so respected. I’d definitely keep a few of these on hand for when I want something classic and dependable. Rating: 8/10

This was my first time smoking one of these, I’m new to cigar smoking so thought this was ideal. Instead it was a bit of an ordeal… Uneven burn and went out on multiple occasions, the last 3rd was particularly poor. Will avoid in the future.

Last of the three tube sampler pack, fortunately this was better than the previous two (minor and J). Lit and drew much better, mild smoke although it took a little effort to keep it going. Frankly a disappointing sampler pack and compared to say the rainy day samplers there was little comparision

I picked up one of these babies at Frankfurt train station on a recent trip to Germany and, having never tried an H. Upmann before, I was pleasantly surprised. The construction seemed almost flawless with a dark, smooth wrapper and an inticing, spicy aroma. It lit easily and held its ash well. The ash dropped off by itself when it was around 3.5cm long. The smoke itself had a lovely smell to it, rich and spicy. I found this to be a very tasty smoke with sweet, fruity earthy notes and a hint of clementine. It lasted me nearly an hour, not including ten minutes I left it and it went out. I’ve read others complaining that these don’t like staying alight but mine only went out when I left it. I really have no complaints with this cigar and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone who likes light to medium strength smokes. On my return journey I picked up another three to put in my humidor. Maybe they’ll get even better!

Please ignore my comment of Sunday 21 December, 2014. It was meant for the H. Upmann Coronas "Junior". I haven't tried a "Major" yet, but I'm a lover of the "minor". Sorry for the error. Oooops !
