COHIBA

Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.

It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret, but now world famous, El LLaguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.

Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.

The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of a Habano.

The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of selection" from the 5 finest Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Uniquely amongst Habanos up to three of Cohiba's filler leaves , the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an additional fermentation in barrels. This unique process produces a special aroma and flavour you will only find in Cohiba.

Cohiba encompasses four different ‘Líneas’ or Lines: Línea Clásica, Línea 1492, Línea Maduro 5 and finally the Línea Behike range.

Through such constant innovation, Cohiba has held its position at the leading edge of the cigar world. It was also the first Havana brand to offer a Reserva cigar in 2002 and a Gran Reserva in 2009 made with tobaccos specially aged for a minimum of three and five years respectively.

All Cohiba sizes are ‘totalmente a mano, tripa larga’, – long filler, totally handmade.

MADURO 5 SECRETOS - La Linea Maduro 5

The Linea Maduro 5 series consists of three sizes each wrapped in a dark maduro leaf which has been specially aged for five years, this line by Cohiba was launched in 2007.

The rich, sweetish maduro 5 flavour in a compact size, which burns well and delivers an intense aromatic taste.

Tasting Notes

A half corona size cigar. What makes these cigars so special lies in the number 5, which flags the five-year aging process to which all their wrappers are subjected.

----

89 / 100

"Smoking this dark, veiny petit corona is like sipping a strong espresso that lingers on the palate from first puff to the finish. It burns slow and cool, producing dense smoke with some black cherry, walnut liqueur and a touch of caramel, although the draw is a bit tight..."

What a cigar. Took this out for an important golf match. Could I put it down to play a recovery shot after looking for what I thought was a lost ball?? No!!! As a newcomer and preferring milder cigars this was a joy! Always thought Montes were the ones to smoke but am converted to the lovely Cohiba flavour. Can't say I picked up all the flavours but all I know is was it tasted nice and smoked perfectly. Hopefully( if I can afford it!) Many more to come

If you enjoy the ritual of preparing and smoking your cigars, then the Maduro 5 Secretos will not disappoint. This truly is a thing of beauty to behold, with a rich, chocolate-coloured wrapper that displays superb totally hand-made construction and a wonderful odour. The cigar toasts easily and produces wonderful quantities of smoke when it's being drawn, but virtually nothing when it's at rest. It has a medium to full body, with pepper being the overriding flavour. The smoke is always smooth, never harsh, but the little Secretos is certainly full-strength, making me feel a little light-headed, but not in an overly unpleasant way. I usually smoke only two thirds of my cigars, but this cigar kept on giving. Burn was a little inconsistent (I've smoked three of my box of 10 so far), but the ash remained firm and stayed in place for almost an inch - and more importantly the flavour stayed delicious throughout the 50 minutes or so they burn for. Not for beginners - the strength is too much - but the Maduro 5 Secretos punches well above its weight. This is a quality cigar and is a delight to smoke. My first box will not be my last.

bought 2 of these last july. Had the first aug last yr. Very nice cigar, well balanced great draw easy smoke. Nothing amazing that set itself apart. The second I have had over this weekend. I pulled it from its humidor and was expecting more of the same. This was different, flavors matured and found their identity. its not offensive and now rounded. Coffee, espresso creme comes through this follows through the cigar a hint of pepper all wrapped in a creamy toffee complex taste. The cigar end with more a choc bent. great cigar once matured. an ok one off the ship.

My first Maduro, and it won't be my last! Did everything you would expect from a Cohiba. Nice even burn, held the ash well and tasted marvellous. I'm no expert when it comes to detecting chocolate hints, etc., what I will say is this cigar is well rounded, fully flavoured with lots of spiciness throughout. I smoked it to the last inch and there was no hint of it burning too hot. This cigar was so good yesterday, I'm heading into Robert Graham's in Glasgow today to buy more.

Not a bad one. Was expecting a little more after reading the previous reviews, but pretty damn good all the same. Gave good smoke with a nice flavour.
