COHIBA

Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.

It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret, but now world famous, El LLaguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.

Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.

The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of a Habano.

The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of selection" from the 5 finest Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Uniquely amongst Habanos up to three of Cohiba's filler leaves , the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an additional fermentation in barrels. This unique process produces a special aroma and flavour you will only find in Cohiba.

Cohiba encompasses four different ‘Líneas’ or Lines: Línea Clásica, Línea 1492, Línea Maduro 5 and finally the Línea Behike range.

Through such constant innovation, Cohiba has held its position at the leading edge of the cigar world. It was also the first Havana brand to offer a Reserva cigar in 2002 and a Gran Reserva in 2009 made with tobaccos specially aged for a minimum of three and five years respectively.

All Cohiba sizes are ‘totalmente a mano, tripa larga’, – long filler, totally handmade.

MADURO 5 SECRETOS - La Linea Maduro 5

The Linea Maduro 5 series consists of three sizes each wrapped in a dark maduro leaf which has been specially aged for five years, this line by Cohiba was launched in 2007.

The rich, sweetish maduro 5 flavour in a compact size, which burns well and delivers an intense aromatic taste.

Tasting Notes

A half corona size cigar. What makes these cigars so special lies in the number 5, which flags the five-year aging process to which all their wrappers are subjected.

89 / 100

"Smoking this dark, veiny petit corona is like sipping a strong espresso that lingers on the palate from first puff to the finish. It burns slow and cool, producing dense smoke with some black cherry, walnut liqueur and a touch of caramel, although the draw is a bit tight..."

Wow! She looks incredible with that beautiful, aged, dark wrapper and opens with some punchy peppery flavours. Then she settles down into delicious chocolate and the final third ends with some seriously creamy textures. The aromas are incredible all the way through, and has left my lips tingling and slightly light headed and absolutely wanting more. A must smoke cigar!

The single worst cigar I have smoked to date. Terrible draw having to constantly re-light. At the end of all the re-lighting you are rewarded with the most wonderful bland and dull taste. Definitely worth trying to make you appreciate how good your current favourite cigar really is. Cohiba should do a blind taste test with this cigar and listen very carefully to the feedback.

Inch for inch, this was the priciest smoke in my humidor and I had been very much looking forward to it. What a disappointment! First, the draw was so tight I was struggling to get much through it. I rolled it around and got it loosened up a bit, but it never quite produced the easy draw and large volumes of smoke I was anticipating. Next, it wouldn’t hold its ash, and it wouldn’t stay lit. I had to relight it three times and after it went out a fourth time I lost the will to try again, with still about an inch to go. Looking at the other reviews, perhaps I was unlucky with the construction of this one. However, overall, this was a very disappointing smoke. I did occasionally encounter the Cohiba flavours I had been looking forward to, but it fell well short of my expectations and I will have to think hard about whether to invest this much again in another one any time soon.

What a fantastic cigar! On the first puff I got a huge hit of chocolate and coffee, almost with a cake-y type taste to it. As the smoke progressed I got a whole host of wonderful rich sweet & savoury flavours, with both dark and milk chocolate type tastes appearing throughout. Immediately this has become one of my favourite smokes and I will be purchasing a box as soon as possible.

Wow what can I say? An excellent little cigar! In my rush to order I didn't really look at reviews and sizes etc and it was a bit of a shock seeing a shorter cigar than what I'm used to but I will be ordering more! Took my dog for a walk while enjoying this and it lasted just over an hour, the burn was even all the way down and the ash didn't drop until well over half way. Upon lighting I got quite a pleasant chocolate punch, amongst other aromas and flavours I tasted wood, pepper and 3/4s down it got very creamy with a bit of spice. These little beauties will definitely be on my top list for walking the dog or reading a book with a good strong coffee
