COHIBA

Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.

It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret, but now world famous, El LLaguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.

Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.

The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of a Habano.

The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of selection" from the 5 finest Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Uniquely amongst Habanos up to three of Cohiba's filler leaves , the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an additional fermentation in barrels. This unique process produces a special aroma and flavour you will only find in Cohiba.

Cohiba encompasses four different ‘Líneas’ or Lines: Línea Clásica, Línea 1492, Línea Maduro 5 and finally the Línea Behike range.

Through such constant innovation, Cohiba has held its position at the leading edge of the cigar world. It was also the first Havana brand to offer a Reserva cigar in 2002 and a Gran Reserva in 2009 made with tobaccos specially aged for a minimum of three and five years respectively.

All Cohiba sizes are ‘totalmente a mano, tripa larga’, – long filler, totally handmade.

MADURO 5 SECRETOS - La Linea Maduro 5

The Linea Maduro 5 series consists of three sizes each wrapped in a dark maduro leaf which has been specially aged for five years, this line by Cohiba was launched in 2007.

The rich, sweetish maduro 5 flavour in a compact size, which burns well and delivers an intense aromatic taste.

Tasting Notes

A half corona size cigar. What makes these cigars so special lies in the number 5, which flags the five-year aging process to which all their wrappers are subjected.

89 / 100

"Smoking this dark, veiny petit corona is like sipping a strong espresso that lingers on the palate from first puff to the finish. It burns slow and cool, producing dense smoke with some black cherry, walnut liqueur and a touch of caramel, although the draw is a bit tight..."

Big fan cohiba of all varieties. Real enjoyed maduro 5 dark maduro richness becoming smoke of choice cohiba doing their usual top draw job. Amazing draw taste from first toasting and through out. Chocolate spicy with no bitterness razor sharp burn from start to finger burning nub finish. Cohiba little expensive for everyday smoke but defo the stick to try on a monthly basis. Herfing bliss

Cover me in chocolate and bite me on the behind! This is a cracking smoke! Lovely flavours with caramel coming through strongly. They have packed some serious flavour into this small stick. It smokes very smoothly and the ash stayed on for ages. Well worth the cost IMO.

I purchased this after reading a review in the Cigar Scene monthly magazine. Initially I enjoyed it thoroughly with a nice aroma and a very good construction along with a lasting ash. I enjoyed this with a couple of cups of black Italian coffee. The flavours of wood, pepper and spices on the initial draw followed by a slightly bitter aftertaste of dark chocolate/cocoa. However, just after half way down the cigar became very bitter and sour. It was a real turn for the worse and I wanted to make sure it wasn't just me so I handed the cigar to my dad (he took a draw at the start to taste it) and he was shocked at how the cigar had changed flavour so quickly. At this price I feel like I paid £13 for half a cigar (a bit pricey). Overall I feel a bit disappointed that I had to give up, but the experience became simply unpleasant.

Have had two of these now, both good smokes, at the stronger end of the flavour scale. On the last one with a glass of decent port I didn't want it to finish. But have to say I still might not buy another as after exploring the cigar market a bit more I feel you are paying too much for the brand, and similar quality is available for significantly less. If you're not watching the pennies I'd recommend this fully, if you are I would suggest looking at the similar El Credito exquisitos or Alec Bradly black market punk, or ideally trying all three and deciding on your favourite.
