COHIBA

Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.

It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret, but now world famous, El Laguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.

Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.

The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of a Habano.

The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of selection" from the 5 finest Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Uniquely amongst Habanos up to three of Cohiba's filler leaves , the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an additional fermentation in barrels. This unique process produces a special aroma and flavour you will only find in Cohiba.

MADURO 5 SECRETOS

The Linea Maduro 5 series consists of three sizes each wrapped in a dark maduro leaf which has been specially aged for five years, this line by Cohiba was launched in 2007.

Tasting Notes

A half corona size cigar. What makes these cigars so special lies in the number 5, which flags the five-year aging process to which all their wrappers are subjected.

89 / 100

"Smoking this dark, veiny petit corona is like sipping a strong espresso that lingers on the palate from first puff to the finish. It burns slow and cool, producing dense smoke with some black cherry, walnut liqueur and a touch of caramel, although the draw is a bit tight..."

Was alright to begin with, your typical cohiba flavours but as I got half way through the strength picked up and there was an unpleasant bitterness. Lasted me 50 minutes and seeing as how I didnt pay standard retail price for it (or the other 2 I have?) it wasnt terrible.

Wow. This is my new favourite. Sweet Maduro wrapper with creamy delicious smoke. I am not experienced enough to pinpoint different flavours but I can say I enjoyed every millimetre of this cigar. Wholly recommend to anyone considering buying these. Perfect draw and 40 minutes of heaven.

Oh dear sorry to say this was a terrible cigar ,I think it was someoneÂ’s first attempt at rolling,it was way way too tight as a result couldnÂ’t get anything from the cigar, very little smoke and so I could not tell you what it might taste like. The little taste I did get was very disappointing not like any other cohiba IÂ’ve had,I wonÂ’t try these again

Of the 20 or so Cuban cigars Ive tried so far this is by far my favourite. It has a gorgeous dark oily wrapper and just looks and smokes perfectly. I wont try and described the flavour as that seems such a subjective activity, just to say that I find it sublime. I plan to have at least one of these a week for the foreseeable.

This was my second Cohiba Maduro, and after failing to tame the larger Genios I was apprehensive. As soon as I picked it up it felt special, this was a very strong firm cigar in the fingers. The toasting took a long time, but I wanted to make sure it was fully and evenly lit. This may have paid off, as I only had one relight and minimal management. I really enjoyed it, but it does pack a punch and you need to keep puffing or it will stop burning at the drop of a hat.
