H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and all H. Upmann sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

CORONA J

Formerly known as the H. Upmann Petit Upmann, this small cigar has the distinction of being the one that President Kennedy bought heavily just before he signed the US/Cuban trade embargo. A great cigar for beginners with a presidential pedigree to boot.

Tasting Notes

This cigar is creamy with hints of coffee and some nutty flavours as well. This small havana promises to have a good future. Attractive, good draw, thick smoke with complex flavors for such a small cigar. Simply excellent.

I'm on a mission to find a cigar of this, approximate, size I will love. This one isn't going to be it. Sliding it out of the tube I had mixed feelings as the build quality and aesthetics were good but unfortunately this chap had a fair bit of light mould over the surface. If the draw had been any tighter I would not have been able to smoke it. Being so tough on the draw this put it on the back foot straight away. I found the flavour dominated by white pepper dominating some nice woody notes struggling to get through. Burn was even and generally good. This cigar didn't feel as though much thought had gone into it so disappointing from HU. Now going to try some other competitors. Must add, great service again from Cgars Ltd!

At first view this is a great looking little cigar and not too imposing, especially for the beginner out there. On lighting I am hit with mild earthyness and hints of chilli, which at first is a slight dissapoitment for my sweet palette. While the burn is near perfect, the draw is surprisingly tight to start, which makes for a little hard work. But, oh my, once half way through and properly warmed up this little gem comes into its own. The earthy chillyness and tightness that I first experienced dissapeares, giving way to a more full bodied cigar with hints of subtle coconut and buttery cocoa on the rear of the palette and tinges of fresh mint to the front, an unexpected explosion of the senses.

Bought a pack of three of these to share with a friend. I smoked the first one one and was really impressed with it. As a relative newcomer my pallet isn't seasoned enough to quote specific flavours, but it was a nice taste. Not bitter and seemed to change as it went. The draw was easy and the smoke plentiful. Very satisfying. The second (which my friend smokes), was a disappointment. Despite a perfect cut the thing wouldn't draw. It was like sucking a golf ball through a hose. No matter what we tried, it wouldn't draw. He eventually gave up as it was becoming a chore to smoke. The third, however, was just as enjoyable as the first so I'm putting it down to a one-off bad cigar. I will definitely buy these again and would recommend them.

This is my first review since taking cigar smoking abit more seriously. I bought this little number after reading the reviews and all round it was a lovely little smoke. The taste was true to the reviews nice and mild nothing to over powering, The draw was abit tight but lasted 30/40 mins. This cigar is on the small side but feels nice to hold great for my official step into the cigar world. I would recommend this cigar to any other beginners. I would also like to thank the services from cgars!

I love this cigar for two reasons. Number one - it is a cigar you can fully appreciate any time of the day in all weathers. It is amazing how time and weather can affect your experience of any cigar but this never fails to please. Number two - the price, this means that it is a cigar I keep a few of and can smoke every day if I wish without burning a hole in my wallet.
