H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and all H. Upmann sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

CORONA J

Formerly known as the H. Upmann Petit Upmann, this small cigar has the distinction of being the one that President Kennedy bought heavily just before he signed the US/Cuban trade embargo. A great cigar for beginners with a presidential pedigree to boot.

Tasting Notes

This cigar is creamy with hints of coffee and some nutty flavours as well. This small havana promises to have a good future. Attractive, good draw, thick smoke with complex flavors for such a small cigar. Simply excellent.

This is my 'go to' cigar of choice. If I'm going to an event- the races etc. I pop a couple of these in the pocket and I know I will enjoy a decent smoke. It's not the most refined cigar but it's consistency as a tubed cigar is without fault. Every now and then one is tight on the draw, but it's still more than enjoyable. The aroma alone is delightful and the taste even better. I even had non smokers commenting on how lovely the foot smoke was!

Being new to cigars, I decided to try a sampler pack which this was included in.Really enjoyed the smoke. For a beginner this was my favourite.

I had a bad first experience with HU and therefore, I left an appropriate review. Michelle from CGars emailed me within 30 mins of my review and offered a replacement cigar. This is, to me, first class customer service. It gave me an opportunity to sample a better HU and make a decision about the brand fairly. Within a few days the replacement arrived and immediately I could see a contrast with my first Corona. The cigar had a lovely sheen and a good, solid construction. It lit perfectly and the burn was also immaculate. The cigar was sweet and nutty without too much complexity and the final third had a little element of spice. Good solid ash and altogether a good experience. Thanks again to Michelle and CGars for allowing me the chance to review what turned out to be a decent cigar.

Really disappointing. Pre-light the wrapper had a nice oily sheen, but on further inspection there were quite a few nips and one major crack. I persevered and lit the cigar. Within a few minutes the crack split and the wrapper then preceded to unravel in my hand. A few more cracks then opened up and it began to disintegrate. The draw (as others have said) was extremely tight and so what I thought was about to be a nice relaxing 40 mins turned into a very frustrating 20 mins watching a potentially good cigar fall apart in my hands. My first HU and now I dubious about trying any more HU.

I gave up smoking 10 years ago but have always maintained that I would go back to cigars on my 50th (much to the dismay of my partner). After reading all the reviews and buying an interesting selection of mild to medium cigars and smelling each of them daily for a couple of weeks before-hand I decided that this would be the one. I was not disappointed. Very easy to smoke with tons of flavour but without blowing my head off like other cubans. Well made as you would expect and burned slow and evenly to the end. T.
