H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and all H. Upmann sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

CORONA J

Formerly known as the H. Upmann Petit Upmann, this small cigar has the distinction of being the one that President Kennedy bought heavily just before he signed the US/Cuban trade embargo. A great cigar for beginners with a presidential pedigree to boot.

Tasting Notes

This cigar is creamy with hints of coffee and some nutty flavours as well. This small havana promises to have a good future. Attractive, good draw, thick smoke with complex flavors for such a small cigar. Simply excellent.

Lovely, easy, quick smoke. Nice draw and construction with a great burn all the way down. Slight spice and bitterness towards the end but will buy again!

Nice taste and smooth but not in the same standard as the monarch written by Matt

A very pleasant smoke, plenty of flavoursome smoke, with a little spice evident as it warmed up. I found the last couple of inches a little bitter, but otherwise very fine. I smoke quite slowly and this lased me a good, enjoyable hour. written by Adam H

A nice cigar but a little small for me. If this were the flavour and strength of an Upmann mareva then Id be a seriously happy Upmann bunny. Burn was excellent and even and it was a great way to spend half an hour walking the dog. written by Benjamin

Nice construction with a very dark, smooth wrapper. Yes it is small, but once flame hits leaf the smoke which pours out is more flavour filled than you might expect. A subtle floral flavour with a mild-medium body and hints of cedar wood and nuts. Ever so slightly sweet with a faint cocoa taste mid way through (age these for 6 months or more and these flavours are more obvious). A very nice cigar, which burns very slowly surprisingly. written by A. Dyer Eng
