H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and all H. Upmann sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

CORONA J

Formerly known as the H. Upmann Petit Upmann, this small cigar has the distinction of being the one that President Kennedy bought heavily just before he signed the US/Cuban trade embargo. A great cigar for beginners with a presidential pedigree to boot.

Tasting Notes

This cigar is creamy with hints of coffee and some nutty flavours as well. This small havana promises to have a good future. Attractive, good draw, thick smoke with complex flavors for such a small cigar. Simply excellent.

I am an absolute beginner with cigars, so my review will be very basic. I found this cigar very very tight and difficult to smoke. Because I was having to suck on the cigar so hard it made it extremely unpleasant to smoke. I ended up giving up with it after about a quarter smoked. Of what I did smoke, the taste was good. Creamy, peppery and leathery. But I am giving this cigar 1 star due to the terrible draw

Perfect introduction to Cuban cigars. Small, mild and sweet and a tiny kick of pepper at the end. Perfect for a present to new aficionados. David - C.Gars Ltd Cigar Ambassador

I am very new to cigars and recently a friend and myself got one of these each in a sampler. I would like to give an opinion on what it was like to smoke but was so tight I could barely get any smoke from it. Id of had a better draw smoking a twig. It turned out to be a complete waste of my money and if this had been my 1st experience of smoking a cigar I doubt I would ever smoke again. Reading other reviews it sounds like a common problem with these and query whether they should be added to the samplers on offer.

Very disappointed with this one because of a very tight first third! Nice flavour but impossible to finish ! Shame
