H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and all H. Upmann sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

CORONA J

Formerly known as the H. Upmann Petit Upmann, this small cigar has the distinction of being the one that President Kennedy bought heavily just before he signed the US/Cuban trade embargo. A great cigar for beginners with a presidential pedigree to boot.

Tasting Notes

This cigar is creamy with hints of coffee and some nutty flavours as well. This small havana promises to have a good future. Attractive, good draw, thick smoke with complex flavors for such a small cigar. Simply excellent.

I’m new to cigars (had RyJs, Montecristo’s and JLP) but just finished half of one of these from a sampler and can’t understand all the negative reviews. Perhaps some badly rolled ones, on occasion. Delightful little smoke. Got through half in 10 mins so quite a quick puff, but delightful. Spicy, earthy and has a lovely, tangy aftertaste. An authentic Cuban taste for sure, with plumes of smoke and good draw. Thoroughly enjoyed however it’s not much bigger than a purito, in my opinion.

I was expecting more from this cigar. Lit ok but the burn was uneven. Not much smoke and I didnt get any of the flavours stated. Could only taste tobaco and a slight pepper or ginger burn to the back of my throat. Left me with a dry mouth too. I will keep trying to find my perfect cigar but this is not it.

This was my first ever cigar, I tried it yesterday. I got 1/3 through smoking it before I had a desire to stop. From the first couple of draws it left me with a dry feeling at the back of my throat, before turning into a bitter after taste that left my whole mouth feeling dry. The cut end of the wrapper began to flake after a minute of smoking. To me, It tastes exactly like a cigar from a supermarket. Very, very disheartened by my first cigar experience. Im now unsure as to whether or not cigar tasting is for me.

DISAPPOINTED :( after only smoking supermarket cigars I thought I would try and find a cigar that I would be happy with for the occasional leisurely smoke . So I started buying cigars at the cheap end of the market from C GARS LTD , but didn't find anything that I would want to smoke as my go to cigar . It was time to step up to the next level and I bought this upmann coronas junior thinking that the " Cuban quality " would provide me with something I would be happy with , WRONG! . The draw on this cigar was so tight from start to finish it was a struggle to keep it going , in fact I only managed 2/3rds before it was thrown away . Not a good experience . Was it a rogue ? I hope so, but where do I go from here after a bad experience with a Cuban ???.

I love this cigar. The construction was flawless and it had a nice even burn all the way down to the finish. The cigar was smooth as silk and the flavours were lovely, fairly mild to my tastes with prominent creamy, coffee and nutty components. Highly recommended.
