Punch is one of the very oldest Habano brands. Don Manuel Lopez of Juan Valle & Co  founded it in the mid 19th century with an eye to the booming British market where a humorous magazine of the same name was much in vogue.

A contented Mr Punch, the clown who personified the magazine, is still featured in every box, cigar in hand, and surrounded by 19th Century images of cigar making that remain virtually unchanged over a century and a half later.

In 1931 the Punch became associated with Hoyo de Monterrey and the two brands have been made in the same factory ever since. Today the factory is La Corona.

Punch's distinct medium flavour created with a blend of filler and binder tobaccos from Vuelta Abajo is available in a wide variety of sizes which are all long filler and totally hand made.

Tasting Notes

Medium flavour and medium to full strength, a good balanced smooth and complex Havana that is well constructed and generally comes with a dark chocolate brown wrapper.

93 / 100

"...Rich chocolate notes immediately come through, transitioning elegantly into a palate of leather, baking spices and a distinct floral note of hibiscus..."

Tried this as my first venture into Cuban cigars for some years. Absolutely loved this cigar, found it to be completely enjoyable from start to finish. The wrapper had a beautiful oily texture to leave my lips feeling moist, whilst the medium strength flavour had a nutty quality. I sipped a bourbon alongside and complimented perfectly. Nice, easy draw, beautifully made with a nice and even burn and didn’t overheat. Can’t wait for my second experience of a Punch.

I cut the end off and tried a dry draw and it was too tight, I cut some more off and still to snug. I then toased it and got it burning, the first few draws were tasteless. Near the end of the first 3rd it was a funny taste. Into the 2nd 3rd I knew it was not going to be good. In the last 3rd I could taste cream and a bit of black pepper. But it only was for about 5 draws. I was so disappointed, and it was a £ 10.50 Cuban, I will never recommend it

This cigar was included in a sampler I bought and unfortunately it was a huge disappointment. Maybe I was just unlucky and usually they are fine but mine had such a tight draw it was almost impossible to smoke. I did what I could to try and loosen the draw but couldnt really get any flavours and gave up after the second third. A big let down but again I might have just been unlucky.

This is my second review of this cigar. Everyone deserves a second chance, after all. Unfortunately, I can firmly say that my recent experience was worse than the first (also, to clarify, Ive had four of these, but have only reviewed two). From the outset, the draw was very, very tight. The first cigar Ive ever had where I could see, prior to lighting but after the cut, that the roll was so dense you could hardly see it – it was almost solid tobacco with no way for any air to get through. The first few times Ive tried this cigar, Ive gradually trimmed until I was able to take a draw. This time, I cut into the first cap – nothing – the second cap – some draw. However, the burn was so uneven I was constantly fixing it. I could distinctly feel the unevenness in the construction between my fingers: very tight on three quarters, very light on the other. Not until (eventually) the last third did it even out (and I was completely bored with it by then). It is very unfortunate though that the draw and construction are so bad, because I love the flavour . . . if it wasnt so much hard work to get to it. I think that the presentation of the dark green tube and the very nice wrapper sell this cigar. Its whats rolled within the wrapper that lets it down. This should be sold for £5, rather than £10+. To further verify this review, I did not buy the latest from Cgars, so it is not their fault or a fault with their storage – its just not a consistently well manufactured cigar. Further, the only reason Ive bought four, over time, is because other reviewers liked it very much but mentioned bad consistency. Although I like the taste, I think Ive given it enough chances at redemption to firmly say Dont waste your money. Ive given it two stars for the taste alone. Everything else was a waste of what could have been a pleasant hour under the stars. Buy Padron or Hoyo de Moneterray instead. Sublime every time.

So this was my first cigar and that might be why I had an experience like this. First off it was very hard to draw on, I had to suck super hard to get any smoke, then where was the flavour...or rather a lack of. The taste was not to bad but definitely unpleasant and left a bit of a burning sensation on the tongue and the back of the throat. The construction was brilliant however and burn evenly the whole somke even with my bad lighting. So overall not a good first cigar experience witch is a disappointing especially considering that this cigar is recommended for beginners on this website.
