Hoyo de Monterrey owes its origin to the town of San Juan y Martinez, which lies at the heart of the Vuelta Abajo zone. Here the Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, one of the great Vegas de Primera, can be reached through a gate on the town's main square inscribed "Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1960."

"Hoyo" literally means "hole" and in this case describes the low-lying position of the plantation on the fertile banks of San Juan y Martinez river.  Jose Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona, first used the name of his vega on a brand of Habanos in 1865.

The flavour of Hoyo de Monterrey's blend makes it an attractive choice for those who seek a delicate yet aromatic Habano that is lighter to the taste but with great elegance and complexity.

Hoyo de Monterrey was the first brand to introduce a Petit Robusto in 2005, the 50 ring gauge size with a shorter length to suit those who like thicker formats, but do not always have the time to enjoy them.

Tasting Notes

93 / 100

"...Smoking this cigar is like chewing on a luxurious caramel, as its sweetness is profoundly dense and elegant. Notes of coffee bean and chocolate-covered almonds add to its richness..."

Im a regular customer with CGars Ltd and generally speaking, most cigars I buy from you are in good condition and ready to smoke. However this Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Especial is by the far the worst cigar Ive ever had. The cigar felt dry and hard from the outset, so I placed it in my humidor for about 7 weeks @ 68% humidity, hoping its condition would improve, unfortunately for me it did not. I tried lighting it, but it did not draw at all. I tried cutting in half thinking the end might be plugged, but still it would not light. Well thats £24 down the drain - I wish I could have said it went up in smoke. My advice is best avoid this one.

One of my favorites; has a similar mild, creamy profile to the Epicure No 2, but lasts longer. Highly recommend it.

New to the cigar world and am currently sampling a number of Cubans. This is by far the best cigar I’ve had so far into my journey, and the only one where I could actually taste the profile of the stick. A mild smoke that lasted 55 mins which is perfect for after dinner sat in the garden. To my untrained palate it tasted like chocolate from the off, and it was extremely smooth. Paired really well with a glass of Bumbu. Burned an absolute treat and I took it to within 3/4s of an inch of its life. 100% box-worthy.

Ive tried a few of these now from various boxes and while they have certainly been pleasant cigars, I have found the blend to be thoroughly average and flat. Nothing Especial about these and in fact the regular Epicure 2s of late have often been exceptional - far more delicious and complex. I may have had very bad luck with these but I wouldnt bother spending the extra when the Epi 2s are much better. They may not be to the horrendous blending standards of pure marketing gimmicks like the Montecristo Open range, but still not worth the money.

Best cigar in the Hoyo range and my favourite cigar, absolutely gorgeous. If you havent tried one of these sticks ask yourself why, you wont regret it.
