FONSECA

Don Francisco Fonseca founded his brand in the 1890's.

A handsome man, who cared deeply for appearances, he passed his sartorial precision on to his cigars, which he dressed in a silky tissue paper - a tradition that continues to this day on all the Habanos that bear his name.

The image of Francisco Fonseca, who developed this brand in 1906, still adorns the box today. Only in limited distribution, the Fonseca brand is considered to exhibit a rich but mild flavour. Fonseca's delicate blend of filler and binder tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo zone makes it the ideal Habano to follow a light meal.

All UK sizes of Fonseca are tripa larga, ‘totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

COSACO

Virtually a Petit Corona and dressed in Fonseca's pristine white tissue.

Tasting Notes

This 42 gauge is the brand's most popular vitola. A smooth flavour and aroma and an easy draw and combustion make this cigar an all-purpose Habano.

"There's a firm draw to this dark, streaky corona, but strong woody notes and touches of candied orange peel still come through...."

Very good constructed cigar with nice draw, and goes well with Irish coffee. Very happy and will order again.

Smoked one of these yesterday on the deck, in the sunshine, after a stressful day at work. The cigar had been laying in my humidor for 12 months. What a little beauty these sticks are. Well constructed, great smell and cut without issue. Pre draw offered a pleasing nutty flavour that reappears in final third of smoking. Great oaky, leathery flavours for the first half, then a light chocolate taste in the middle leading to the previously mentioned nutty flavour to finish, almonds actually, very nice. Burn was razor sharp all the way down to nearly burning my fingers. Draw was tight for the first half and opened up after, not in an unpleasant way though. I was surprised at the smoking time, lasted about 80 minutes. I am going to get some more and allow them to rest in the humi for a good while. In summary an excellent, surprising smoke that is truly a bargain.

I had one of these yesterday as I did my shopping at the market. I was a little dubious after a dud cadetes from the same company, but this was good, rich, easy going, flavourful and sweet. It’s not going to replace my usuals, but I’d buy some more for occasional smoking. Outside in the autumn, idling around, it was perfect.

This was quite a nice smooth relaxing smoke, well constructed, consistent, even burn to the end and a good cool draw throughout. Very slight herbal/hay and woody taste. The tissue paper is a nice touch too. Will buy again...

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. I bought one of these based on the previous reviews that I had read and was looking forward to sitting out on the deck with a coffee and enjoying this cigar. I was surprised when I removed the paper coating to find the stick was quite veiny and the seam of the wrapper was quite prevalent. Nevertheless, I cut and toasted (narrowly missing the remains of the cap peeling away) and then sat down to enjoy this smoke. Initially, I found the smoke harsh on the soft palate and back of the throat. I was getting a strong saltiness which wasn't unpleasant but the harshness was distracting from the flavour. Just as it began to settle down and get a bit more mellow, the burn began to grow increasingly uneven. The ash began to droop and then after only about an inch of the way down, it went out completely. I relit and continued but very soon thereafter, the burn became uneven again and a dark colouration started to develop halfway down the wrapper. It didn't lose the bitterness either. And then, another half an inch and it went out again! At this point, I was cursing myself for not lighting a Hoyo de Monterey Epicure #2 or an Inka secret blend Azul blue petit corona. I therefore decided to leave it at that after only twenty minutes and not bother trying to light it again. At least the coffee was still warm. Most disappointing.
