I received this cigar as part of the Try Something New mystery cigar offer and it offers very good value for money. The dark wrapper has an appealing appearance and, overall, construction was decent. It was, however, let down slightly by a lack of consistency, with a few soft spots noticeable along the length. The draw was very good straight after first light, which is worth noting as cigars of this size can often smoke on the tight side.
The first third was pleasant and approachable, delivering earthy flavours alongside some leather and a light touch of pepper. As the cigar moved into the second third, it developed some enjoyable hazelnut notes. These flavours were not entirely consistent, coming and going rather than remaining firmly established, but were welcome when present.
In the final third a slight bitterness did appear, though nothing overpowering, and the cigar remained perfectly smokeable right to the end.
Overall, this is a solid value cigar and I’m glad I gave this Drew Estate cigar a go. It is not something I would regularly reach for, but it did exactly what the offer is meant to do and helped broaden my range of brands and blends.
