COHIBA

Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.

It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret, but now world famous, El LLaguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.

Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.

The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of a Habano.

The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of selection" from the 5 finest Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Uniquely amongst Habanos up to three of Cohiba's filler leaves , the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an additional fermentation in barrels. This unique process produces a special aroma and flavour you will only find in Cohiba.

BEHIKE BHK 52 - 'VOTED BEST CIGAR OF 2010' by Cigar Aficionado. Rating: 97

The Linea BHK swept all before it when the three sizes were introduced in 2010, and yet it was the smallest, the BHK 52, that was awarded the prestigious Cigar Aficionado "Cigar of the Year" in the same year. A stunning and unique taste from Havana.

The Linea BHK cigars include two extremely rare and exceptional leaves from Cuba, the very top two leaves which are found on the sungrown plants. These leaves are known as "Medio Tiempo" and have a much higher concentration of oil.

The Vegueros began separating Medio Tiempo leaves during the harvest (when they could find it), processing and aging medio tiempo separately. When it was ready, they began using it in the blending room, and now it’s one of six leaves that go into all Behike BHK cigars.

Mitchell recommendsBehikes have a limited annual production so when they are gone - that’s it for the year. That makes them a candidate for laying down, maturing and collecting and many customers are already making 10 year plans for laying down a quantity of BHK’s annually.

Tasting Notes

The BHK’s have a different blend to the 40th anniversary Behikes (aged 5 years) as well as an extra Medio tiempo filler leaf which will give the cigar a very distinct flavour characteristic as this is a dark leaf from the top of the plant.

97/100

"...The shortish, fat smoke, made with an artful pigtail and clad in gorgeous Colorado wrapper of reddish brown, is a phenomenally rich, delicious smoke that more than lives up to the reputation of cigars with the name Cohiba..."

My first of the three behikes and I wasnt disappointed, I had this beauty in my humidor for about a year and was waiting for the right occasion to smoke it. On first lighting I knew I was in for a treat. Even burn, light grey solid ash, plentyful smoke and the taste..... Roast beef yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes topped off with a rich gravy. I know that sounds mad, but it was that full bodied, like a good red wine, it had a depth of flavour that went on and on, i didnt want it to stop. Looking forward to now smoking the other two sizes, but that will have to wait untill I have replaced all three in my humidor. I know that they are at the upper end budget wise, but you get at least an hour of pure pleasure from a 52. Bite the bullit, its cheaper than a thai massage and twice as relaxing!!!!!

a very nice cigar indeed, even though this was my first behike, i enjoyed it very much. i accompanied it with a glass of port and it seemed to match it perfectly. the only downfall for me is, it was too short and i couldnt enjoy the full flavours for long enough as the cigar started to turn bitter and very hot towards the last 3rd loosing sum flavour and replacing it with a harsh smoky taste. i may have smoked it too quickly as i was very excited to try it.but all in all a very very enjoyable smoke for the first 2/3. i shall defiantley buy another and and make it last longer and cant wait to see what the 54 and 56 have to offer. my advice is as it is a small cigar please take your time too fully enjoy the earthy, leathery/ spice flavours this cigar has to offer. dont jump in like i did and smoke fast because flavour and smoothness becomes harsh. 8/10 for me but thats because i didnt take my time. c.gars ltd did a great job in supplying me with this product very quickly and hassle free and even threw in a box of matches and a mint. very pleased and will be coming back 100%. thanks guys and happy new year.

A cigar that every aficionado, and at least everyone who enjoys cigars should try and judge for themselves. Okay, the presentation is perfection in a cigar, setting the bar for construction and size. The draw was easy and the aroma spicy and tobacco-listic (if that is a word!)! Initially there was a hint of nuttiness and light peppers, and exceptionally smooth. It tasted, for me, surprisingly light in strength and medium in body, having the same blandness as a Robusto T with hardly any bitterness, with smoke enough to satisfy your average cigar smoke lover, not too much to overwhelm a room. The middle portion brought out a roasted, toasty caramel flavour, hints of cedar, and peppers increasing slightly, while maintaining that super smooth kick. However towards the final 1/3 the flavours did intensify becoming more medium to full bodied (for me at least!), bringing out hints of fruitiness, nutty almonds, sweetness, and a thicker smoke. Yet the stick did leave my mouth rather dry and salty. As for the ash, it did start off smooth with some flakiness, but toward the middle and end portion of the stick becoming increasingly flaky and powdery. Hallmarks of a well aged blend? It did last for 1 1/2 inches before falling, with a mixture of dark grey ash coupled with stripes of black. A little toothy, levelling off halfway through. I did smoke this cigar on an empty stomach, with freshly brewed coffee! A fine cigar, yet not sure whether the price is right. Be that as it may, I am by no uncertain terms an expert in taste, and still see myself as a novice when it comes to appreciating a ultra premium cigars. I am afraid that you are just going to have to try it out yourself and see what the fuss is all about!
