H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and all H. Upmann sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

HALF CORONA

Introduced in 2011 the Half Corona is the first 3 1/2 inch Havana to be introduced since the Second World War. Previously called the Half-a-Corona, it was in its day the best selling Havana size.

Tasting Notes

This cigar is creamy with hints of coffee. Small attractive Havana, good draw with complex flavours for such a small cigar. An excellent short smoking break cigar.

"A short corona that burns slowly and draws well, loading the palate with lots of cedary, fruity notes as well as a hint of cinnamon and a peppery finish..."

Beginner to cigars and tried this one. Not bad, smooth and woody flavour. Nice slow burn. Enjoyed most of it but when I got to the last puff it got very hot and bitter. Sadly that put me right off getting another. Got 2 montecristos to try left so I’ll see how they go. So 3 starts for me.

Good quick smoke. Tastes like a Cuban and reasonably priced.

Still very new to cigars, however this is definitely the worst cigar I’ve smoked so far. The first third was very very acrid and bitter, not enjoyable at all. I persevered into the second third which became slightly better. Creamy with coffee notes, however the draw was almost too easy and when I looked into the end there was a large hole through the middle of the cigar (which explains the strange draw). The final third the bitterness returned and I had to put it out. I did not enjoy this cigar at all, but after reading other reviews I think I may have just had a poor stick, but based on this experience there is far better for the money

First up, I cannot commend the staff at Cgars highly enough, orders have always been delivered promptly and arrive in perfect condition. This box was delivered by hand! What a wonderful smoke the Upmann Half Corona is! Mild but complex enough to keep you entertained, beautiful construction, quality is always spot on. They can be smoked all the way down to the shortest stub without becoming bitter. Consistent flavour all the way through the stick. Perfect for a summer afternoon before dinner.

Decent smoke. Fairly mild flavours, not much complexity until the final third. Starts of with typical Cuban hay/earthiness, develops to a nice bit of pepper near the end. Got too spicy near the nub so had to be put out earlier than I normally would. Construction was good, but as it’s hand rolled (I think?) not as great as some others I’ve smoked.
