H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and all H. Upmann sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

HALF CORONA

Introduced in 2011 the Half Corona is the first 3 1/2 inch Havana to be introduced since the Second World War. Previously called the Half-a-Corona, it was in its day the best selling Havana size.

Tasting Notes

This cigar is creamy with hints of coffee. Small attractive Havana, good draw with complex flavours for such a small cigar. An excellent short smoking break cigar.

"A short corona that burns slowly and draws well, loading the palate with lots of cedary, fruity notes as well as a hint of cinnamon and a peppery finish..."

Got a couple of these recently for a holiday next month - since they arrived I have been eager to try one after all the positive reviews, and as the wife wasn't feeling too well and decided to go bed early, I did the loving husband thing and took the opportunity to slip away to my man-cave and try one out (or, the official line, to let her get a few hours uninterrupted sleep before I came to bed...) Wow! What a superb little cigar. The flavour was right there from the start (thankfully, on such a small stick) and I found it evolved constantly throughout the half hour or so it lasted me (I wasn't paying particularly close attention to the clock...) Burn was perfect, with no touch-ups needed. Draw was a little tight, but that wasn't a terrible thing on a little one like this. The cigar itself was absolutely delicious. Grass, caramel, dark chocolate, honey and coffee appeared at various points (there were a few draws that reminded me particularly of a caramel latte) Throughout the entire cigar there was also plenty of cream and nuts (at one point, it was specifically walnut). One other review mentions an almost buttery taste, which I would also agree with. I paired it with a Plantation XO 20th anniversary rum, they complimented each other perfectly. The only downsides was that I got a little distracted towards the end and it ended up going out a touch earlier than I would have liked, but that was my fault. I also wish it was a bit bigger so could be a longer experience! I will certainly be getting some more at some point soon, and will be recommending them to my usual smoking buddy when I next see him

Very good little stick. Smoked well and fairly evenly. The flavour was fairly creamy and moderately intense for a light to medium bodied cigar. The flavour didn't drop and it was easily smokable to the butt of the cigar. Would definitely smoke again, as it is a very flavoursome little stick. Got about a half hour smoke which was impressive for the size.

The Upmann half corona is a all time favourite of mine, full of great flavours and is often paired with a coffee which complements one another beautifully. I have always recommended these cigars not just on their guaranteed creamy flavours but also as a good short time smoke(around 20min) I often add these on my order as my humidor wouldn't be complete without them.

I am a cigar novice and made a trip to the Turmeaus store today in Mayfair to purchase this delightful cigar after reading so many excellent reviews (in addition to my regular go to Montecristo Puritos and a Montecristo No. 5). I have to concur, this is a truly wonderful little cigar and I thoroughly enjoyed my stroll through Hyde Park puffing away on this little beauty. It was a lovely smooth draw and burnt really well and brought to mind coffee and nuts. I felt thoroughly relaxed and like another reviewer, smoked it right down to my fingers. I was so sad when it was gone. It is a real pleasure to visit the Turmeaus store which is in a delightful location and I was expertly served by David.
