H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and all H. Upmann sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

HALF CORONA

Introduced in 2011 the Half Corona is the first 3 1/2 inch Havana to be introduced since the Second World War. Previously called the Half-a-Corona, it was in its day the best selling Havana size.

Tasting Notes

This cigar is creamy with hints of coffee. Small attractive Havana, good draw with complex flavours for such a small cigar. An excellent short smoking break cigar.

"A short corona that burns slowly and draws well, loading the palate with lots of cedary, fruity notes as well as a hint of cinnamon and a peppery finish..."

Ive slowly been trying numerous cigars (from very expensive and large to small) from various websites sampler selections for some time and have finally settled on these. The length of smoke suits my once in a while on a warm summers night by the fire approach and they often get smoked over 2 nights which is great.I won't go into the notes and flavours of these or any other cigars as I think it's a bit ott to describe some of the notes that people feel they need to attach to the experience of what is essentially a ton of tobacco.Lets just say that like any cigar you can get good and bad ones on the draw but they taste as good as any I've tried. They are up there with the usual suspects from Cuba. I think ultimately we we all need to find a brand to stick with and these are mine.

For such a short cigar, I was surprised to see this last approximately 50 minutes. Nice even burn, and didn't have to be relit once. The draw was slightly tight, although this didn't detract from the enjoyment. I found the flavours to be excellent - minty on the cold draw, with leather, spice, citrus and various further flavours that my immature palette is unable to describe effectively. Complex, and thoroughly enjoyable.

After reading the previous reviews thought i would give this a go and has been in my humidor for about 2 weeks, no crunch on the cut and on first lighting found it to be very bitter strong ash flavour wich carried on through out. Burn was not very even and ash didn't stack up very well found it to be lose and had to be re lit 3 times and the draw felt very tight. Not sure if i got a dud one here or my humidity in my humidor is not right for this cigar. did pick out a bit of vanilla and leather here and there though. Wasn't very impressed with this one at all not my cup of tea.

I smoked this cigar last night, being my first ever cigar I wanted something fairly mild that had good reviews. I wasn't disappointed. It had a lovey even burn all the way down and tasted great.
