H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and all H. Upmann sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

HALF CORONA

Introduced in 2011 the Half Corona is the first 3 1/2 inch Havana to be introduced since the Second World War. Previously called the Half-a-Corona, it was in its day the best selling Havana size.

Tasting Notes

This cigar is creamy with hints of coffee. Small attractive Havana, good draw with complex flavours for such a small cigar. An excellent short smoking break cigar.

90 / 100

"A short corona that burns slowly and draws well, loading the palate with lots of cedary, fruity notes as well as a hint of cinnamon and a peppery finish..."

Being new to the world of cigars I am trying various brands. This was my first h.upmann and I found it a real treat, lovely draw, even burn. Quite a mellow flavour but intensified in the final third. Recommend.

I love these little cigars!....there are better cigars out there but for a half corona that costs 8 quid, they are really very good! It was the comments mentioning "creamy, smooth leather & hints of coffee and/or chocolate" that first made me prick up my ears and subsequently had this old dog wagging it's tail! Lovely relaxing, trouble free smoke that's sure to last most a good 30-40 minutes depending on individual cadence. Do yourself a favour and pull the trigger on 2 or 3, chuck them in the humidor for a few weeks to settle and break one out at a suitable time of your choosing.

An excellent little cigar, perfect for me for something to sit in the sun with for 40 minutes. I did have to relight this cigar once but it does happen sometimes, no biggie. Exquisite flavours of rich sweetness, coffee, leather and spice with hints of aged wood and dark chocolate in there too. I would really recommend these.

Ive slowly been trying numerous cigars (from very expensive and large to small) from various websites sampler selections for some time and have finally settled on these. The length of smoke suits my once in a while on a warm summers night by the fire approach and they often get smoked over 2 nights which is great.I won't go into the notes and flavours of these or any other cigars as I think it's a bit ott to describe some of the notes that people feel they need to attach to the experience of what is essentially a ton of tobacco.Lets just say that like any cigar you can get good and bad ones on the draw but they taste as good as any I've tried. They are up there with the usual suspects from Cuba. I think ultimately we we all need to find a brand to stick with and these are mine.
