H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and all H. Upmann sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

CORONA J

Formerly known as the H. Upmann Petit Upmann, this small cigar has the distinction of being the one that President Kennedy bought heavily just before he signed the US/Cuban trade embargo. A great cigar for beginners with a presidential pedigree to boot.

Tasting Notes

This cigar is creamy with hints of coffee and some nutty flavours as well. This small havana promises to have a good future. Attractive, good draw, thick smoke with complex flavors for such a small cigar. Simply excellent.

Not a bad cigar. Construction was alright, seemed a little bit flakey for my liking. Nice mellow aromas pre-smoke, nice colour also. The smoking of this cigar was a mixed bag of emotions as it were. Negative points were mainly the uneven burn, and i had to relight it a few times which was annoying. The draw was pretty tight, a little too much for my liking. The flavours were really nice, not too overpowering- woodiness and spiciness were the most prevelant. The flavours didn't change much throughout the smoke, so there wasn't too much evolution to really enjoy. On the whole, a nice sized cigar with simple flavours- good value. written by Jack

A nice round taste from these ones but the draw was very tight. I bought a pack of 3 and, although tasty, each one was as tight as the last. One for the cigar smoker with lungs like bellows. written by Tom Murphy

Not a very good cigar. The first half of the cigar tasted very bland and the draw was way too tight. That really spoilt the smoke for me and I was almost tempted to abandon it early on. However the last third of the cigar seemed much better as I could detect a nice creamy flavour. Still though, I wouldn't recommend them. written by Graham
