H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

Tasting Notes

This cigar has a generous flavour and aroma, easy draw and excellent combustion. The preliminary step into the Robusto cigars. Well constructed, an excellent cigar.

89 / 100

"Though rich in color, the wrapper of this robusto is covered in kinky veins. It's a very cedary smoke with plenty of up-front citrus notes and underlying hints of minerals. An intermittent chocolate sweetness leads to a chalky, saccharine finish..."

This is certainly the best cigar I have smoked in the month or so that I have been smoking havanas! Everything about this cigar - the look, smell & feel of it, the way it cut, and best of all the way it smoked (easy draw, plenty of smoke, and lots of flavour, but not overpowering)! A very satisfying 45 minutes ;-) written by Adrian Boliston GBR

Chances are this Upmann will come as a definite surprise to most smokers. It delivers a lot more than it looks, a great flavour and mellow aroma, a nice oily smooth feel and smell. Add to this a great construction and burning quality and you have the picture. What I dont understand is why exactly they called it Connoisseur. Hm, strange... written by Mihai
