H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

CONNOISSEUR NO. 1

Connoisseur is a historic Linea within the H.Upmann brand, whose most relevant size was the very much appreciated - The H. Upmann Connoisseur No. 1 Cigar is the one Cuban cigar that every aficionado needs to have in their humidor!

Featuring a Hermosos No.4 vitola (measures at 5"/127mm by a 48 ring gauge) It is filled with the finest tobacco leaves from Vuelta Abajo in Cuba. A light-medium bodied smoke - you can expect cedar, nutty and floral tasting notes.

Each cigar features a bold band - featuring the name of the cigar imprinted on it and stored in a cedar sliding lid cabinet.

Tasting Notes

This cigar has a generous flavour and aroma, easy draw and excellent combustion. The preliminary step into the Robusto cigars. Well constructed, an excellent cigar.

89 / 100

"Though rich in color, the wrapper of this robusto is covered in kinky veins. It's a very cedary smoke with plenty of up-front citrus notes and underlying hints of minerals. An intermittent chocolate sweetness leads to a chalky, saccharine finish..."

Poorly constructed with a large hole 1/3rd into the cigar. Had to re-cut it several times to get it properly lit. VERY disappointing.

Like other reviews I was pleasantly surprised at how good this cigar is. Mine have been consistently good. Excellent contruction and burn. Hints of spice, cocoa and earth. A cross between a Juan Lopez and a Hoyo Epicure No2. A great anytime smoke. I will have to get more !!! written by MrY

A nicely constructed cigar. An even burn with smooth toasty aroma, a bit of herb and a little coffee bean note. The taste only enhanced my glass of Johnnie Walker Blue. What a great evenig! written by Michael
