SAN CRISTOBAL

San Cristóbal de la Habana was the original name of Havana, Cuba’s capital city, when it was founded in 1519; San Cristóbal (St Christoper) in honour of Columbus and La Habana after an Indian name for the site.

San Cristóbal de la Habana cigars were introduced in 1999 on the threshold of the new Millennium as a tribute to the city’s long history.

At first the range comprised four vitolas, each named after one of the fortresses that defended Havana when it was the hub of Spain’s American empire. These are: El Morro, La Fuerza, La Punta and El Principe.

In 2004, three new sizes were added, which are unique to San Cristóbal. These are named after well-known streets in Havana’s 17th century Old Town: Muralla, Mercederes and Oficios. However, all of these have since been discontinued and, while some may still be found in UK shops, the range in current production stands at three vitolas.

All San Cristóbal’s vitolas are ‘Tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade to a light to medium flavoured blend of filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo tobacco zone.

LA PUNTA

A Belicoso size named after the small fort on the point of the entrance to Havana harbour opposite the Morro Castle. Shows all the great smoking qualities of this figurado size.

Tasting Notes

A rich full bodied cigar full of flavour with a hint of vanilla. A strong finish, making it an ideal after dinner smoke.

90 / 100

"A veiny torpedo that’s woody and tangy with an underlying nuttiness. Notes of leather come through before the woody finish. The cigar has an open draw and fairly even burn..."

I had allowed this beauty to rest in the Humidor for a few months when one evening it called to me. What can I tell you, It was as sublime! Rich, medium smoke with those typical Cuban flavours, no harshness and a splendid creamy nuttiness and sweetness. Thoroughly recommend!

Good quality cigar, long lasting and great construction. Up there with the Bolivar Belicoso, maybe even better! Earthy, woody, hints of floral and sweetness.

Delicious after a light lunch. I hadnt tried a La Punta for years, so sampled one at Turmeaus lounge. Well aged and covered in bloom over its light and slightly rustic wrapper. The draw was easy with just a little resistance, but the smoke remained cool and delicious with a good burn. The first half was light-medium bodied and built up slightly in flavour also, with beautifully balanced waves of light roasted coffee, honey, toasted almond and soft pepper spice. The second half became much more medium bodied developing an oaky woodiness, dry grass and herbal notes with a small burst of spice at the end. Smoked it to my fingertips. Often overlooked, but these can be excellent and age beautifully.
