Room 101 Cigars were founded in 2009 with the intent to honour the craft and rich history of cigar making whilst applying a progressive approach to both blending and product design. From its inception the Room 101 brand quickly garnered the respect and intrigue of cigar traditionalists as well as a newer breed of enthusiast in the early stages of what was to become an era of ‘boutique’ brands.

2017 saw the reincarnation of Room 101 Cigars. With the launch of exciting collaborative projects with both the Caldwell Cigar Company and AJ Fernandez, Room 101 again demonstrated the brand’s ability to transcend the norm and skyline as a house of innovation in terms of creativity and quality. These first products paved the way towards the debut of new collections under the Room 101 name to solidify the brand’s position in premium tobacco.

Rolled at Tabacalera William Ventura in the Dominican Republic, Matt Booth explains that Farce is the first part in a new cigar series for Room 101 ‘Farce is the first instalment in a multi-blend sub-brand series for Room 101 Cigars, I have invested tremendously in these products, intending that they properly reflect the evolution of the Room 101 brand in the cigar class. This is not a one-shot deal - it is the beginning of a new era for Room 101 in the cigar business.’

Tasting Notes

Light notes of sweet tea and bitter almond warm up to show notes of black pepper and caramel with a woody, pipe tobacco finish. It’s a nutty, woody cigar with pleasant touches of cloves, nougat and vanilla.

I enjoyed this one but I had some issues with it. Right off the bat I was met with a lovely nutty almond flavour in the 1st third. This evolved slightly in the 2nd with notes of caramel. The final 3rd developed into a warm cinnamony pepper spice. Unfortunately the construction let the cigar down. It began to unravel halfway through and the draw was too loose. I had to puff constantly to keep it properly lit.

Absolutely beautiful looking cigar, slightly oily to the touch with a stunning mocha coloured, smooth wrapper, combined with the beautiful looking bands makes for a really understated but classy looking cigar. Incredibly packed, feels heavy in the hand, quite a tight draw, initially cut with a single V, I needed a second V to open it up, even then smoke output is thin...needs 2 or 3 draws to get decent amounts. Very smooth, slightly sweet, slightly creamy upfront followed by roasted almond, black pepper and some gentle leather and coffee. Ash retention is around an inch or so and quite flakey, burn is slightly uneven but no corrections needed. Amount of draws needed for decent amount of smoke leads to slight overheating. Decent enough, not sure I'd have another.

Room 101 Farce was definitely one of the more unique smokes I’ve had as a beginner. It’s marketed as a complex, medium-to-full-bodied blend, and that complexity really came through. On the first few puffs, I got this interesting mix of earth, pepper, and a subtle sweetness, almost like dried fruit. The flavors shifted quite a bit as it went along, which kept me on my toes. At times, there was cocoa and espresso; other times, more wood and spice. The construction was solid, though I did need one touch-up on the burn. The draw was easy, and the smoke output was thick and satisfying. I can see why people say this cigar has layers—it felt like it kept evolving, which was exciting but also a little challenging for someone new like me. It’s definitely not a one-note cigar, and I think that makes it worth trying if you want to push your palate. The strength built toward the end, with more pepper and richness, but it never got overwhelming. Overall, I enjoyed it, though I’d say it’s better suited for when you’re in the mood to pay attention. Rating: 7/10
