PARTAGAS

If there is one building in Havana that excites cigar lovers above all others it is the old Partagas factory. You can find it at No. 520 Industria Street, just behind the Capitol building, in the heart of the city.

The factory was opened in 1845 by Don Jaime Partagas and was still operational until just a few years ago. It is now closed with plans to transform it into a cigar museum well under way. The Partagas shop on the ground floor however, remains open and is well worth a visit.

A Partagas is immediately recognisable by its deep, earthy flavour. The character of its blend springs from a selection of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and chosen for their unmistakable richness of flavour and aroma.

Partagas come in a wide array of shapes and sizes notably the Lusitania and the 8-9-8, a cigar that is named after the way it is arranged in its box.

But perhaps the best known of all Partagas is the Serie D No.4, the robusto size that formed part of the legendary Partagas alphabet series that dates back to the 1930s. In 2005 a Pirámide, the Partagas Serie P No.2, was added to the range, which has fast become the cigar of choice amongst lovers of full-flavoured Havanas. In 2011 the Serie D No.5 and the heavy ring gauge Serie E No.2 extended the alphabet series once again. 2014 saw the most recent addition to the range when the diminutive D.6 was added.

All sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

SERIE D NO. 4

Many see this as the definitive Robusto. With its controlled, rich, complex taste and distinctive red and gold band, they have a good point. A pure bred Havana.

Tasting Notes

Well balanced and smooth, classic cuban Partagas aroma and construction. Wonderful. A king amongst Robusto cigars.

"Beautiful to behold, this good-looking robusto is made with a dark wrapper and a flat head. Floral notes transition to a leathery, earthy palate with touches of wood, honeyed tea and roasted nuts. The draw and burn are open and even..."

As a novice cigar smoker I browsed online forums and discussion boards to find the right cigar to start on. This cigar is great! It is smooth and flavourful and lasts a decent amount of time, perfect for a summer afternoon. The last half of the cigar gets more and more flavour but never becomes unpleasant.

Currently working my way through a box from Nov '10.Simply sublime cigars! They're never going to win any contests for their aesthetic appeal but the true beauty,as it should, lies within the wrapper.Sweet spice and the classic Cuban white pepper, much as you'd expect from the marque, but also some glorious and quite unexpected Digestive biscuit (Gram cracker) flavours in the first 1/3 and beautiful dark chocolate notes weaving their way in and out throughout the duration. This smoke is worth every penny of the price.Spend some time with it,you'll be very glad you did!!

Okay there are cigars with flavour, and there are cigars with flavour, and this is certainly the latter! The first few puffs simply released an explosion of spice, sweetness, leather, with hints of ginger and cinnamon, in an oily super smooth fire of peppers (without the heat of course!). The strength of the spice and richness of the flavours continued. Some floral tones creaping through in the after taste, with a lovely nutty roast. The tobacco is so damn rich and smooth that it literally felt like licking an ice-cream made from pure warm roasted Cuban leaf! Creamy and earthy flavours were also evident. Just a multi-tude of character beaming from this cigar! Even finding the leather rich, creamy and smooth that it just adds to the whole experience makeup. Overall, this is one of only a few cigars I have smoked that rigorously drowns you in a rich stew of flavours. Only problem was its increasingly feathery structure that did seem to collapse by the final few inches, resulting in multiple puffs just to get a good amount of smoke in it. Sadly more puffs per draw equated to an increase in leather intensity, infecting the other flavours.

Based on the other reviews here I think I must have had a bad stick, but the PSD4 I just had was rather disappointing, very little smoke, and what there was wasn't great. It livened up towards the end but overall a let down. I shall definitely be buying another just to see if I did have a bad one, and hopefully to see what this cigar is really capable of. written by Colin
