PARTAGAS

If there is one building in Havana that excites cigar lovers above all others it is the old Partagas factory. You can find it at No. 520 Industria Street, just behind the Capitol building, in the heart of the city.

The factory was opened in 1845 by Don Jaime Partagas and was still operational until just a few years ago. It is now closed with plans to transform it into a cigar museum well under way. The Partagas shop on the ground floor however, remains open and is well worth a visit.

A Partagas is immediately recognisable by its deep, earthy flavour. The character of its blend springs from a selection of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and chosen for their unmistakable richness of flavour and aroma.

Partagas come in a wide array of shapes and sizes notably the Lusitania and the 8-9-8, a cigar that is named after the way it is arranged in its box.

But perhaps the best known of all Partagas is the Serie D No.4, the robusto size that formed part of the legendary Partagas alphabet series that dates back to the 1930s. In 2005 a Pirámide, the Partagas Serie P No.2, was added to the range, which has fast become the cigar of choice amongst lovers of full-flavoured Havanas. In 2011 the Serie D No.5 and the heavy ring gauge Serie E No.2 extended the alphabet series once again. 2014 saw the most recent addition to the range when the diminutive D.6 was added.

All sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

SERIE D NO. 6

Although only 3 1/2" long this cigar has all the hallmarks of the Partagas brand. It is as rich, earthy, peppery and powerful as you would expect from Havana's most popular full flavoured cigar brand.

Tasting Notes

89 / 100

"Dark and oily with a triple cap. This short robusto draws and burns evenly, starting with a woody, toffee-like smoke that takes on a stony, mineral aspect before the leathery finish..."

Wow. This one packs an almighty punch in a little package! The D6 looks and feels great - as a previous reviewer said these are a thing of beauty as is the stylish, minimalist and contemporary packaging, particularly the black and red 5 pack. With an almost perfect 50 RG and length - the D6 is well made and consistently provides an enjoyable :35 minute smoke. They have a good draw and even burn, with flavours of wood, including some cedar and lip-tingling spiciness evident - with an unexpected hit of crushed black pepper coming at the end. There is a reasonable smoke output too and a pleasant aroma. I’d say they fall into the medium- full strength category. They are expensive - their D5 and D4 stablemates are probably much better value for money and last a good bit longer - but nonetheless the D6’s are good. Pair with a Havana Club 7 and you won’t go far wrong...

Unfortunately my experience of this cigar was a negative one. I had to suck the life out of this stick to get anything from it. I tried to work it and ride it out but sadly the troubles latest till the very last draw. I did stick with it until well into the final third as I have had such a great experience with this cigar when I received it 3 or so years ago as a gift and I badly wanted to make this work. The flavours then were so much tastier so I wonder if the poor draw had anything to do with it or the other cigar was aged longer than I could bare to age this one. I wouldnt discourage anyone from this because of my experience all those years ago was soo positive, but at over £13 teamed with my recent experience, I cant see me trying this again. I am gutted as I had high hopes of rekindling that beautiful smoke I had been longing for. My past eperience mostly lends to the star rating, it would be lower otherwise.

As one of my first dozen smokes it was definitely a short 30 minute experience as I was smoking on a cold, windy and slightly rainy lunch time. The wrapper had minimal veins and had a green tint in places. I found that the cut even below the shoulder resulted in the wrapper slightly unravelling nearer the end. It didn't leave an unpleasant after taste like I have experienced form other cigars so I think it would make a great short lunch time break. Lots of creamy smoke and easy draw, which was a real finger burner nearer the end. However, for me it wasn't really the cigar I was looking for. As for a £20 per hour smoke I have had a similar pleasant experience from cheaper cigars of this size

This is the cigar that the Partagas range has been crying out for! When time is short and you don't have time to enjoy a PSD4, this delicious little stick saves the day. The draw is slightly tighter than I usually prefer but still gives off plenty of thick smoke. Rich and strong tobacco flavours with very little sweetness, definitely a smoke for later in the day. This is a fantastic cigar if you are someone who likes your coffee strong and black, a real finger burner that leaves you wanting more and wishing you had the time for something larger!
