PARTAGAS

If there is one building in Havana that excites cigar lovers above all others it is the old Partagas factory. You can find it at No. 520 Industria Street, just behind the Capitol building, in the heart of the city.

The factory was opened in 1845 by Don Jaime Partagas and was still operational until just a few years ago. It is now closed with plans to transform it into a cigar museum well under way. The Partagas shop on the ground floor however, remains open and is well worth a visit.

A Partagas is immediately recognisable by its deep, earthy flavour. The character of its blend springs from a selection of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and chosen for their unmistakable richness of flavour and aroma.

Partagas come in a wide array of shapes and sizes notably the Lusitania and the 8-9-8, a cigar that is named after the way it is arranged in its box.

But perhaps the best known of all Partagas is the Serie D No.4, the robusto size that formed part of the legendary Partagas alphabet series that dates back to the 1930s. In 2005 a Pirámide, the Partagas Serie P No.2, was added to the range, which has fast become the cigar of choice amongst lovers of full-flavoured Havanas. In 2011 the Serie D No.5 and the heavy ring gauge Serie E No.2 extended the alphabet series once again. 2014 saw the most recent addition to the range when the diminutive D.6 was added.

MINIS

Presented in a stylish pack of 10 minis. Intense, rich, earthy aromas for which the brand is renowned. Made from leaves harvested from the same plants used for hand made Habanos. Ideal for a taste of Cuba during a brief alfresco smoking break.

If, like me, you are looking for something to smoke at the pub in the winter months when your friends go out for a cigarette, then these fit the bill quite nicely. A nice snapshot into that tangy and spicy partagas flavour that we all love.

Im not a fan of minis usually, but when I was given a pack of these as a gift I was quite surprised at the great taste of them.

Enjoyed the first two but others were a disappointment, I've put two away to see if they improve. They are very loosely wrapped and apart from the first two the others left a bad taste in my mouth. Not sure if I dropped on a bad batch, probably will wait a while before I try them again. I could give two completely different reviews based on the first two and the last two. As it's the first time I've had them I will reserve judgement and see what a bit of time does to the two I've stored away. The first two were truly mini Cubans.

I really enjoyed these cigars. I am not an experienced smoker, I've had a couple of convenience store cigars and that's about it. When they arrived I had one straight out the box, it must have been dry as it burned quite hot and had a bitter after taste. I got a humidor setup properly and popped them in it (loose, not in tin) for two days. The texture of the cigar changed completely, it was much more moist and took a little longer to light (not saying much given the size of the cigar). The flavour was completely different, much smoother, smoke was cool and no bad after taste. I was able to smoke right up until it hit my fingers, I had it with a coffee sitting on the back patio and it was just class. I can't even complain about them lasting only 10 minutes given the size of them. Excellent, highly recommended for a quick smoke break. If mini cigars are considered poor compared to a 'proper' cigar I can't wait until I light up something with a bit more girth ;)
