PARTAGAS

If there is one building in Havana that excites cigar lovers above all others it is the old Partagas factory. You can find it at No. 520 Industria Street, just behind the Capitol building, in the heart of the city.

The factory was opened in 1845 by Don Jaime Partagas and was still operational until just a few years ago. It is now closed with plans to transform it into a cigar museum well under way. The Partagas shop on the ground floor however, remains open and is well worth a visit.

A Partagas is immediately recognisable by its deep, earthy flavour. The character of its blend springs from a selection of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and chosen for their unmistakable richness of flavour and aroma.

Partagas come in a wide array of shapes and sizes notably the Lusitania and the 8-9-8, a cigar that is named after the way it is arranged in its box.

But perhaps the best known of all Partagas is the Serie D No.4, the robusto size that formed part of the legendary Partagas alphabet series that dates back to the 1930s. In 2005 a Pirámide, the Partagas Serie P No.2, was added to the range, which has fast become the cigar of choice amongst lovers of full-flavoured Havanas. In 2011 the Serie D No.5 and the heavy ring gauge Serie E No.2 extended the alphabet series once again. 2014 saw the most recent addition to the range when the diminutive D.6 was added.

All sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

898

A legendary Cuban size named after the way the cigars were presented in a box of twenty-five, eight in the top row, nine in the middle and eight on the bottom. Partagas has made this elegant size its own.

Tasting Notes

Strong and well balanced with a rich aroma and flavour. Very good combustion and draw. Simply perfect.

A good smoke, draw was rather tight but burn and ash were pretty good, nice flavours of sweet bread and dough.

Fantastic flavours after initial 1/4, much like the grassy notes of a RyJ but also a keynote of any Partagas. Underlying full flavour throughout the smoke enhanced by developing dark chocolate and a hint of coffee. Good draw if a little tight. The main downside was it started to canoe towards last third and then became impossible to draw and keep alight, a proper battle, so I gave it a prod and it eventually came good with 3/4 to spare but by then I had had enough. Shame. Overall - good value, nice cigar, could be Russian roulette with a box, who knows. I have ordered another which arrived today, as I live in hope they will come good. One of the most flavoursome cigars Ive had to date. 3 stars due to superlative flavour but loses one or two for the fiasco at the end.

I used to smoke these, varnished and unvarnished twenty years ago....loads of them. They were one of my favourites. Tonight, I am saddened by the highly expensive offering before me. The woody, nutty flavour is there, yes it is . The distinct Partagas taste which exists throughout the range does appear. however, the construction is unquestionably abysmal. Four or five relights and numerous touch ups prove the point. I believe Partagas, in general have lowered their standards considerably over the years and I will certainly be giving this one a wide berth.

Cigar started promising with a lovely wood cream, second third became very intense and spicy. Sadly the cigar had poor burn, needing multiple relights and touch ups which in the end did ruin my experience. Not one I will revisit.

WARNING: do not smoke this if you are a novice or early in the day!!...this is a powerful cigar that’s rich and bold in character and powerhouse of a Cuban cigar. The first few puffs (if you can make it through) are a spicy and strong earthy and black pepper mix with a slight cashew nut in the background. After the first third it settles down in terms of intensity but the flavours are there. I got a hickory/ BBQ flavour mixed with the flavours described in the first third. The end of the cigar calms down a lot. Not much flavour but gorgeous Cuban Tobaco with a strong nicotine hit. You definitely need something to drink, with some sugar so I opted for a Havana club and coke. This is a classic Cigar, a must have but not to be messed with.
