OLIVA

The Oliva Cigar story began in the late 1800s, when Melanio Oliva started growing cigar tobacco in Cuba. His heirs carried on the family tradition in the fields, but it was his grandson Gilberto Oliva Sr. who began making cigars.

Nicaraguan tobacco helped Oliva survive. The cigar that brought it to the attention of connoisseurs debuted in 2006: Oliva Serie V. Made by a small group of rollers and blended for strength and style, the Serie V line was an immediate hit. In 2012, to pay tribute to the first man in the family to grow cigar tobacco, Oliva added the Melanio version, which is distinguished from the original by its Sumatra-seed wrapper grown in Ecuador. The No. 1 Cigar of the Year 2014, Oliva Serie V Melanio Figuarado has rich, big notes of leather framed by a range of coffee, caramel and woody intonations. It’s a classic smoke.

SERIE V

Serie V is a complex blend of Nicaraguan long filler tobaccos. Blended with specially fermented Jalapa Valley ligero, and finished with a high priming Sun Grown Wrapper.

Tasting Notes

This flavourful blend exhibits complex tobacco with rich coffee and dark chocolate tones. A subtle and well balanced spice is present throughout.

"...Ten years ago, Oliva Cigar Co. released its Serie V, which was the strongest, most full-bodied cigar the company ever created. But it was also impressive in its ability to render layers of richness and complexity in spite of its power. Ten years later, we found ourselves with the same excellent product. It's difficult enough to maintain such quality and consistency, but even more of an accomplishment when you consider this: Oliva has been acquired by a larger company. In 2016, Oliva Cigar was bought by European cigarmaker J. Cortés Cigars N.V., who wanted a premium brand in its portfolio. Naturally, there were concerns about the Oliva cigars changing and quality suffering. Luckily for the cigar-smoking world, J. Cortés kept Oliva president José Oliva on board after the acquisition, to help ensure that quality was maintained. So far, the change has been seamless and the Serie V remains remarkable for its ability to convey high volumes of flavor, especially at such a low price point. The blend is centered around strong, ligero tobacco from Nicaragua's Jalapa Valley and a high-priming wrapper to complete the taste profile, which is rich in earth, leather and spice though balanced with a sweet touch of molasses..."

Wow, iv had cuban cigars that taste no where close as good as this, i got lashings of coco and chocolate all the way down in full body, was like having a milk shake, fantastic! Well done oliva, this is now my no1 cigar as yet! Need i say more.

This is undoubtedly one of the finest cigars available. It is a firm, well-constructed cigar, which allows good flow of air through its body and therefore ample smoke for little effort. The bitter outer leaf provides for an interesting, almost liquorice taste. At just over a tenner per cigar this represents extremely good value, relative to all the other 'big-name' cigars of a similar size and quality. Now that it appears to have stopped raining, I will be stocking up on these for my summer enjoyment!

An absolutely first class cigar. Honestly if you are thinking of picking one of these up, DO IT. I heard so much hype on cigar forums about the Oliva Serie V so I tried one and man I was not disappointed. This blows even some of the most popular and big named Cubans out of the water. The construction is beautiful, as soon as I held it I knew it was going to be something special. A great looking wrapper with fantastic shape and size. The flavour was exquisite, perfectly blended tastes and an unbeatable draw with great smoke out put. I cannot recommend this cigar enough, a true top of the list stick.

Is this the best non-cuban I've ever tasted? Quite possibly, yes. Does it give many pricier cubans a bloodied nose? Yes. Does it have an ultra smooth, complex earth and leather undertone throughout? Yes. Does it produce mindnumbing amounts of smoke and burn perfectly throughout? Yes. Is it ever hostile? No. Buy one and love it. Mine was with rum, but I imagine it will work with almost everything. Not for the fainthearted.
