OLIVA

The Oliva Cigar story began in the late 1800s, when Melanio Oliva started growing cigar tobacco in Cuba. His heirs carried on the family tradition in the fields, but it was his grandson Gilberto Oliva Sr. who began making cigars.

As with so many cigar stories, Gilberto Oliva Sr. faced a difficult road. He left his native Cuba in 1964, and eventually started working for the Plasencia family in Honduras. In 1995 he and his son Gilberto Jr. created a cigar within Plasencia’s factory called Gilberto Oliva. A year later, they set out to open a factory of their own, and shortened their brand name to Oliva.

Nicaraguan tobacco helped Oliva survive. The cigar that brought it to the attention of connoisseurs debuted in 2006: Oliva Serie V. Made by a small group of rollers and blended for strength and style, the Serie V line was an immediate hit. In 2012, to pay tribute to the first man in the family to grow cigar tobacco, Oliva added the Melanio version, which is distinguished from the original by its Sumatra-seed wrapper grown in Ecuador. The No. 1 Cigar of the Year 2014, Oliva Serie V Melanio Figuarado has rich, big notes of leather framed by a range of coffee, caramel and woody intonations. It’s a classic smoke.

OLIVA ORCHANT SELECCION

This cigar is the result of collaboration between Mitchell Orchant, Tor Imports and Oliva to produce a uniquely blended Oliva cigar tailored to meet Mitchell’s high standards and the UK cigar smokers palate; all at affordable prices!

Mitchell underwent a rigorous sampling exercise in the summer of 2014 to carefully select the blend and create a stylish design using the award winning Serie V Melanio as his inspiration.

Tasting Notes

This cigar is a super creamy smoke, offering a silky array of aromas which fill the room. You will be introduced to spice as you begin this smoke which is complimented with cedar wood and a subtle pepper tone. This does mellow by the half way point and continues to be a creamy and delicious earthy and woody finale.

Just enjoyed one of these with a nice cold IPA, it was an excellent complement. Nice light-medium flavours, decent strength, and lots of smoke. Im an amateur cigar smoker but I could taste chocolate for the first half an inch or so, after that just a pleasant tobacco taste with hints of spice. Ill stop trying to describe it now before I embarrass myself; suffice it to say that I enjoyed this one a lot and Ill be ordering more!

Just put this one down. Pretty nice, good even burn the whole smoke, lasted about 50 mins. Very nice draw, smooth and tasty. Not many distinct flavours other than nice tobacco, but that may just be me. Got a bit tarry towards the last quarter. Great for a beginner like myself, good value, nice taste, even burn. I liked it, but have to recommend the tubed inka secret blend red (these 2 are my first purchase outside of cuba where i picked up the passion), as its just a nicer smoke and cheaper too

I ordered up various selection packs to restock the humidor after a cigar hiatus of a couple of years, included in which was this little beauty. After resting for a couple of days in the humidor I poured myself a generous measure of a Bruichladdich virgin cask edition and settled down in the garden for a little relaxation. First impressions were good, the construction was excellent and the cigar just looked good. It cut well and lit easily. I always found cigars to be as subjective as whisky when reviewing, but for what it is worth this is my tuppence worth...... Initially the cold draw I found to be quite astringent, warming quickly to dry toast and well worn leather as the first third progressed, once it warmed and progressed through the second third it mellowed dramatically, transitioning to a beautiful rich tobacco flavour underlayed with honeyed melon or pineapple, coffee and the barest hint of a pleasant spice (perhaps a little white pepper?). The final third remained very mild and gentle with a gradual increase in the overall spice. Overall the experience was incredibly moreish. The draw was perhaps a little looser than my preference, although this did not detract in any way from the experience. Overall I must say that it was a welcome return to cigar smoking, an exceptionally pleasant way to spend 45 minutes or so. If the other two vitola's are in the same league as this then I will be hard pressed to decide which gets the honour of filling my humidor. Well done Mitchell, you have produced an absolute belter!

Had about 6 of these now. All the others were perfect but this one was quite bitter and went out a couple of times too. However I would still maintain that this cigar is brilliant value for money and I will carry on buying for definite. If you are on a budget or are looking for an ever day puffing stick, you really should try a few of these.
