J.C. Newman Cigar Co. is reintroducing Yagua, a classic cigar from the tobacco fields of Cuba that the Newman family first recreated in Nicaragua last year.

The Yagua story is one of Cuba from the 1940s. The cigar was inspired by J.C. Newman PENSA’s General Manager, Lazaro Lopez, who shared the following with Drew Newman (Fourth Generation Owner, J.C. Newman Cigar Company) over dinner in Estelí, Nicaragua in 2019:

“At our family farm, my grandfather would take fresh tobacco leaves from the curing barns and roll cigars without any molds or presses. In an attempt to give his cigars a traditional shape, he would tie a handful of them together using pieces of the Cuban royal palm tree, known as the yagua. When he was ready to enjoy his personal cigars, he untied the bundle. He loved how every cigar had its own unique shape. I still remember the rich aroma and taste of my grandfather’s cigars. Today, I’ve recreated Yagua, rolling them exactly how my grandfather did a century ago.”

“After hearing Lazaro describe the beautiful Yagua cigars he remembers from his youth in Cuba, I asked Lazaro if he could make this special cigar at our factory in Nicaragua,” said Drew Newman. “We call it Yagua, after the palm leaves that give the cigars their distinct shape. Because the cigars are pressed together and bound while they are still wet, each one has a slightly different shape. Each cigar is truly unique.”

"Yagua is a difficult cigar to roll because we use an under fermented Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, blend the filler tobaccos differently, and do not use the usual tools and techniques of a cigar factory.  As the wrapper is not fully fermented, the cigar is aged for a full year after they are rolled."

Tasting Notes

The Yagua starts with earthiness, leather, oak, sourdough bread and some roasted flavors. Toastiness is the dominant flavor on top of cedar, black pepper, coffee and meatiness. It finishes with earthiness followed by a generic pepper, green grapes, more damp earth, and a very long-lasting black pepper.

This is everything I want in a good cigar. Earthiness with a hint of leather and cedar, a good consistent draw right to the end, plenty of smoke and a nice even burn.throughout. Its appearance is unique thanks to the way it’s been packed and it has a lovely dark oily wrapper which has been perfectly rolled and looks exquisite. Lasted well over an hour and never once underperformed. Why would I need Cuban when Yagua is every bit as good. I suppose I am going to have to buy a box of these next to be sure I’m never without. Better start saving cos they’re not cheap but for this quality I wouldn’t expect them to be. The David Tabernacle has been my go to cigar up until now. Now there’s a strong contender!

I was given one of these cigars when I attended the August tasting evening at Cgars Great Yarmouth. At first draw I found it to be very earthy but upon smoking, it became more and more enjoyable. It was an even burn and stayed lit most of the smoke. It had hints of cocca and gave a bitter sweet taste, a lot like a strong dark chocolate. There was peppery overtones and was a very nice smoke. I had it sitting in the garden on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Because of the sweetness of this cigar, It would work well with a whisky that has been matured in sherry casks such as a Lindores Sherry Release Lowlands Single Malt that that I purchased at the event in Cgars in Great Yarmouth or it would pair perfectly with a vintage port. Maybe a full bodied red wine? At the end of the smoke, it stayed constant and did not get too hot as some cigars do. I started towards the end to get notes of cedar and could detect ripe berries. This is why I feel that it would go with a port or full bodied red. It had three distinct caps and would properly be easy to cut, although, and this might upset the purists, I used a punch cutter and the wrapper stayed intact. all in all, a very pleasant and enjoyable cigar. I am no expert, but this is worth the money.

I think these may be my favourite new find of 2024. A great medium to full smoke and I love the individuality of each cigar. I very much hope that Newman continues to roll this limited edition.
