MONTECRISTO

Montecristo is the best known and probably the most appreciated brand of Havanas throughout the world. It forms the benchmark for many Havana smokers against which other brands are judged.

The name comes from Alexandre Dumas’ famous novel ‘The Count of Montecristo’, which was a firm favourite when read to the Torcedores (cigar rollers) at the factory where it was founded in 1935.

The original Montecristo range of sizes was composed of a narrow assortment numbered from 1 to 5. Today it consists of a wide variety of vitolas to cover every level of the cigar enthusiast’s needs.

Whether it is within the classic medium-to-full line, the lighter Open Series or the newer, more powerful, Linea 1935, Montecristo’s perfectly balanced blends are all created exclusively with selected filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone, home of the finest tobaccos in the world.

MEDIA CORONA

Medias Corona literally translates as “Half Corona” and the size was first introduced in the UK back in 1907 by an English cigar importer who wanted to stop keeping his wife waiting for him at the theatre while he enjoyed the last of his Corona sized cigar.

The Montecristo Medias Corona represents the second time that this format has been used and, at just 3 1/2 inches long, it remains the shortest long-filler handmade Cuban cigar you can buy.

Tasting Notes

The taste that has made Montecristo the world’s most sought-after premium cigar is often described as “tangy”. Certainly the flavour is distinctive.

Other words commonly used to describe the taste include ‘coffee’ and ‘cocoa beans’, ‘pepper’ as well as ‘orange peel’, ‘cinnamon’ and ‘vanilla’, all of which lead to the conclusion that a delicious bitter-sweet, spicy taste lies at the heart of Montecristo’s success combined, of course, with the perfect balance of its tobacco blend.

"While the draw is a bit airy, this short corona burns evenly. Its core of fruit, spice and wood is accented by notes of cocoa powder and earth..."

After a pretty naff day I decided to try a little Monte to chill out, I aged this stick around 2 months too. First off quite a bitter taste almost unpleasant, then settles into a rich creamy leather and quite spicy little stick. Medium strength and would buy again.

I had this cigar at 10am with my morning coffee and I was very pleasantly surprised. My ash dropped off just as I was finishing up my smoke, lovely bright ash. Im quite new to cigars so Im still in the early stages, however I would certainly recommend. For me it was an earthy taste and it wasnt over powering. I use a punch and the draw was excellent.

Until now my opinion of Montecristo cigars was somewhat negative. I'd tried a couple but with bad results. The first was a "tubed," no. 4 which I smoked only half of and then left because I didn't enjoy it whatsoever, maybe it was a dud.The second was from the "Open," range and again I wasn't impressed at all so it was with trepidation that I approached this cigar. It was, however, third time lucky. Right from the start I knew this was something special. Wonderful mellow flavours that only a Cuban can provide. In the past I'd tried the H. Uppmann version but this is the "real deal." Could become my cigar of choice. Thoroughly recommended. I must now try the Petit Edmundo though.

First time smoking this cigar, and it was.. OK. The construction of this cigar is great so no problems there, completed this in about 25 minutes, only ashed out twice and pared this with some coffee in the morning. For me though it lacked in flavour, I mainly picked up some sharp pepper on the lips that faded quickly, a slight grass and hay aroma, and a very flat earthly tobacco throughout, not much change. My only gripe with this cigar unfortunately was that moments after finishing it my mouth felt very dry, almost like drinking gin and tonic and having that overall dry sensation, which I didn;t expect. I personally wouldn't pick this up again, but i think if was aged for a few weeks or months maybe some flavours could of matured
