MONTECRISTO

Montecristo is the best known and probably the most appreciated brand of Havanas throughout the world. It forms the benchmark for many Havana smokers against which other brands are judged.

The name comes from Alexandre Dumas’ famous novel ‘The Count of Montecristo’, which was a firm favourite when read to the Torcedores (cigar rollers) at the factory where it was founded in 1935.

The original Montecristo range of sizes was composed of a narrow assortment numbered from 1 to 5. Today it consists of a wide variety of vitolas to cover every level of the cigar enthusiast’s needs.

Whether it is within the classic medium-to-full line, the lighter Open Series or the newer, more powerful, Linea 1935, Montecristo’s perfectly balanced blends are all created exclusively with selected filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone, home of the finest tobaccos in the world.

NO. 1

The lead size of Montecristo when it was initiated in 1935. The standard bearer for the medium to full, tangy taste that conquered the world. A treasure for the cognoscenti of Havana cigars.

Tasting Notes

Smooth and packed with flavour, excellent draw and burn. Distinguished appearance, bold taste, but a creamy smoke. Quality tobacco in all respect.

90 / 100

"An attractive lonsdale with a nicely textured cover leaf. Light impressions of white pepper, citrus, dried fruit and graham cracker all intermingle before a cedary finish. The combustion is even, but the draw was a bit firm..."

I was really disappointed with this one. Montecristo are one of my 'go to' brands, especially the No. 2 and No. 4 which have always been great. This one had such a tight draw it was very difficult to smoke. I tried unplugging it, but that made no real difference. I got some of the tastes, but not enough for what you would pay for one of these.

Not my personal favourite of flavour, however absolutely nothing wrong with the quality etc, smoked excellent throughout, never had any issues with this website and they price matched which was handy!

One of my gotos is the No. 4 because it always delivers on flavour, draw, burn and smoke. The No. 1 is similar in every aspect apart from the draw for the first two inches, and in turn the smoke. Very tight by comparison and therefore for the extra money Im not convinced its a viable option, for me anyway. Being an engineer I have, sadly, calculated that this works out £0.45/inch dearer than the No. 4.

If you are tired of Montecristo no 4 better to go for number 1 for a better and longer experience. This cigar is not very popular which means the quality and construction is usually better as they produce less. Favourite cigar of the great actor Christopher Lee. David - C.Gars Ltd Cigar Ambassador

Once upon a time Montecristos were one of my favourite brands and I used to buy them in large quantity. With some trepidation I just tried a No.1 after years of not smoking them and unfortunately the trepidation was justified. The draw on this cigar was ridiculously tight and so the first two inches were really quite miserable. After that poor start things did improve though and there was 10-15 minutes worth of reasonable enjoyment when the draw normalised and the flavours calmed down to a mellow nuttiness. Nevertheless poor value for money if that really is representative of the brand now.
