JOSE L. PIEDRA

José L. Piedra is a particularly noteworthy Havana not only because its blend is composed of filler tobaccos grown exclusively in the Remedios tobacco region (formerly called Vuelta Arriba), but also because it is made using the ‘totalmente a mano, tripacorta’, or ‘totally hand made, short filler’ technique.

The Piedra family came to Cuba in the 1880s from the Spanish province of Asturias. They settled near the town of Santa Clara, which lies at the heart of the Remedios region where tobacco has been grown since the 16th Century, and started to make cigars.

The family’s second generation led by José Lamadrid Piedra, whose name is commemorated today, founded and developed the brand.

All of the José L. Piedra sizes are made from Remedios tobaccos using the traditional ‘tripa corta, totalmente a mano’ – short filler, totally handmade technique.

CAZADORES

Immediately you will notice the distinct, somewhat rustic, medium to full taste of the Remedios tobaccos in these cigars. A cigar for the great outdoors.

The Cetros tastes like a cigar should ,strong & earthy.Nicotine kick is mild, it wont give you a headache. The best of it is it will last all day as it is tight rolled & keeps going out, but this leaves you with a flavoursome chew before relighting.

@ Alistair: The £3.99 cigar you refer to is the petit Cazadores and not the full sized ones here.

Time to eat some humble pie. While on holiday on the Island of Kos at the start of this month, I visited a well stocked tobbaconist to supplement the 'holiday' supply I'd bought from CGars. 5 Siglo 1's and a few others were chosen. Then I saw the Piedra Cazadores at €4 each. I decided to buy one for a smoke as I had a coffee nearby. After my al fresco herf, I went back and bought 10 more and every one (I'm smoking the last one as I write) has been perfect! I was clearly unlucky the last time, and I feel I was a little hasty to judge. After all, if the quality control is not as stringent, some bad 'uns will slip through the net. I, like so many others, have had bad examples of more expensive well known brands. So, basing this on individual experiences, they get 5 stars. When they're good, they're bloody good!

Came here to edit my review but I can't so I'm writing another. Bought 5 of these as the first one I had was okay and at this price... I won't be buying any more. I've smoked 3 of them so far. First one was a very hard draw, but manageable, second was okay but the third was completely unsmokeable. It was almost impossible to draw on so it kept going out and the wrapper had unravelled *completely* by the time I got half way so I threw what was left away. I never thought I would get one that was that bad. It was embarrassing, frankly. If they can be that bad I wouldn't even keep them to give away.
