HOYO DE MONETERREY

Hoyo de Monterrey owes its origin to the town of San Juan y Martinez, which lies at the heart of the Vuelta Abajo zone. Here the Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, one of the great Vegas de Primera, can be reached through a gate on the town's main square inscribed "Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1960."

"Hoyo" literally means "hole" and in this case describes the low-lying position of the plantation on the fertile banks of San Juan y Martinez river.  Jose Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona, first used the name of his vega on a brand of Habanos in 1865.

The flavour of Hoyo de Monterrey's blend makes it an attractive choice for those who seek a delicate yet aromatic Habano that is lighter to the taste but with great elegance and complexity.

The brand is renowned for its Double Corona and for the prestigious Epicure series, the No.1 and No.2, to which the longer Epicure Especial was added in 2008. There is also a range of vitolas known as the Le Hoyo Series. These are generally accepted to be slightly stronger and spicier than the brand’s classic range.

All sizes are ‘tripalarga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade using filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo tobacco zone.

PETIT ROBUSTO

Perhaps this cigar would have been better named Epicure No.3 as its presentation and style of taste are identical to the Epicure 1 & 2. Introduced in 2004, it was a timely anticipation of what smokers would face with smoking bans.

Tasting Notes

Added to the brand in 2004 and probably one of the best new cigars produced in that year! Full of flavour, spice, rich and sweet. The cigar lasts around 40 minutes and have a great flavour and complexity. Definitely a cigar to be smoked with at least 6 months age.

89 / 100

"Though raw and muddled at first with a touch of harshness, this petit robusto warms to show a nutty smoke with notes of baked apple, black pepper and wheat. The draw is a touch firm...."

Unfortunately my cigar tunnelled but I believe this to be resultant of too intense of a heat upon lighting, with the core becoming hotter than the outsides (I used a triple jet flame) But my word, the flavours were to die for. A wonderful host of rich flavours, I don't need to repeat exactly what they were as this is clear from the other reviews. The bad burn was unfortunate but I believe it to have been my fault, it will not put me off buying plenty more.

Fantastic cigar, smooth, even burn 40-50 minutes down to the nub. Didn't want to put it down. Added to the preferred list of cigars!

Oh my word what a fantastic cigar. It was so smooth and creamy and really mild. It did burn quite quickly which was a bit sad as I was enjoying it so much and did get a bit warm, but I smoked it until there was nothing left to hold onto. The ash looked wonderful. I really recommend this cigar - an exceptionally good smoke.

A delightful cigar packed with full of flavours in a short smoke. Expect a light, nutty and creamy treat from the moment you light it up. The flavours start to develop further once you get into the cigar towards 2/3 through where hints of chocolate, spice and woody/leathery notes work it's way through towards the finish. It delivers a thick amount of smoke output with an easy but smooth draw every time, which I find satisfying. For a short cigar it holds the ash rather well, there was one minor issue with the cigar due to the way I had lit the cigar, causing the cigar to burn uneven to begin with (my fault) but after a simple touch up with the lighter it smoked perfectly till the end. An ideal cigar to have any time of the day, I would highly recommend! Michael - Staff Review
