CUABA

Every Cuaba is made in the distinctive shape known as a double figurado, the style that at the end of the 19th Century was all the rage for Habanos.

Double figurados are at the pinnacle of the cigar makers' art and for this alone they merit a place in every cigar enthusiast's collection.

Cuaba, like Cohiba, is a Taino Indian word dating back to the time of Columbus. It was their name for a highly combustible bush, which the Indians used to light their 'Cohibas.'

Tasting Notes

The odd one out in the Cuaba range due to their different cap construction, being flat and not pointed the current batch have superb colorado maduro dark and oily wrappers and taste slightly fuller in terms of flavour than the rest of the range. The darker wrappers give a slightly sweeter taste with hints of spice and underlying earthy tones that are very pleasing. A good, sweet finish that leaves you wanting another one.

----

93/100

"A primarily nutty-tasting petit perfecto with earthy hints of carob chips and a toasty undertone that reverberates on the long finish. The draw is open and full...."

My first impression on looking at this was , well thats unusual ! Compared to say a Montecristo #5 ( my default smoke) I thought it would be a really quick smoke given its diminutive size but was really surprised. The initial burn wasnt linear following I think the the wrapper torpedo shape but then despite this , it settled down, didnt burn too quickly and held its draw evenly, in fact better than the MC which occasionally I find hard work. I suspect the construction is probably firmer and therefore more consistent but time will tell. Im not great on describing flavours but I do like a creamier short smoke and this reminded me a bit of some smaller grand cru Davidoffs Ive had in the past in that respect. This is a lovely short smoke, exceeded expectations and something I will go back to.

Fantastic, flavoursome short smoke. As with all Cuabas, perfect construction and draw producing plumes of fragrant smoke. Smooth, smooth taste and unusually satisfying for a small cigar. Amazing value for under a tennner RECOMMENDED

Ordered as part of a sampler. Got to be honest i didn’t really like it and it’s this first cigar I have had to stub out early. Very bitter to me in flavour (maybe just my pallet). Very disappointing but hey that’s what samplers are for.

I picked up one of these in Brussels recently. It seemed well made with a nice, dark, oily looking wrapper. As many others have stated, it had a tight draw, although it produced plenty of smoke and the draw didn’t affect the smoking of it much, tight as it was. The pre-light draw had an earthy quality to it with hints of sweetness. The burn wasn’t the best. It became uneven quite soon and didn’t correct itself so I had to touch up the lagging side with my lighter. The first few puffs were truly amazing. Naturally there was that unmistakable Cuban flavour along with earth and creamy chocolate notes. This soon gave way to a much more noticeable earthiness and some spice, still with that creamy chocolate in the background. The spiciness picked up in the second half and intensified towards the end. I smoked it until there was just less than an inch left and only abandoned it because it was tunnelling and another touch up would have killed it anyway. Despite the less than stellar burn and draw, it was one of the tastiest cigars I’ve ever smoked. The flavours were bold, even with the tight draw and I was surprised at how varied it was, considering its size. It lasted nearly 40 minutes (which surprised me due to its length) and I’d say it’d probably go 45 for me if I smoked it down as far as I’d have liked to. I’ve got to give this 5/5 despite its flaws. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a very tasty 40-45 minute smoke. I’m definitely getting some more. Partly to see if the one I smoked was a one off or if they’re all this good, and partly because I think they’d be a perfect choice for those occasions when you want a smoke but don’t have the time for the extra inch or two I usually go for.
