COHIBA

Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.

It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret, but now world famous, El LLaguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.

Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.

The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of a Habano.

The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of selection" from the 5 finest Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Uniquely amongst Habanos up to three of Cohiba's filler leaves , the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an additional fermentation in barrels. This unique process produces a special aroma and flavour you will only find in Cohiba.

Cohiba encompasses four different ‘Líneas’ or Lines: Línea Clásica, Línea 1492, Línea Maduro 5 and finally the Línea Behike range.

Through such constant innovation, Cohiba has held its position at the leading edge of the cigar world. It was also the first Havana brand to offer a Reserva cigar in 2002 and a Gran Reserva in 2009 made with tobaccos specially aged for a minimum of three and five years respectively.

All Cohiba sizes are ‘totalmente a mano, tripa larga’, – long filler, totally handmade.

SIGLO I  - La Linea 1492

The Cohiba Línea 1492 range was first announced at a reception at the Captain General's Palace in Havana on 4th November 1992, which took place during a Festival held to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus.

The Linea 1492, originally consisting of five sizes - Siglo I, II, III, IV and V before the VI was introduced in 2002, were expressly introduced to mark Columbus's 500th Anniversary and each Siglo (which means 'Century' in Spanish) commemorates one the five subsequent centuries.

The Linea 1492 is classified as medium flavoured and remains the lightest flavoured line of Cohibas.

Tasting Notes

91 / 100

"The reddish, colorado wrapper and neat triple cap make this a charming cigar to behold. The draw is open and even, as is the burn, showing a big steeped saffron note that ushers in additional layers of brioche, leather and white pepper before the floral, cedary finish..."

An good choice when pressed for time, but be warned, they are very moreish! Classic earthy and woody flavours. Provides a good draw and thick smoke, but is never harsh or aggressive. Great afternoon or after dinner smoke.

This is the first Cohiba I have had above the Club size and have to say for such a small cigar they are like Dr Who's Tardis small on the outside but wow what flavor creamy fruity beautifully smooth, the draw was excellent and a lovely aroma a great looking small cigar with the iconic Cohiba band a very pleasant 30 to 40 minutes smoke will determinately be buying more of these and paying that little bit extra to get a tubos one just to get the beautiful tube.

I've had a couple of these in the past and was a bit disappointed by the experience as I do enjoy the flavours of a good Cohiba, however last night I found one hiding in the humidor and thought I'd give it another go. In the short time it has spent in there it already displayed a marked improvement over others I've had (bearing in mind the others we smoked more or less straight from a walk in humidor). The wrapper was nice and oily and once lit it gave off the typical Cohiba aroma (albeit slightly less spicy). The draw was smooth and provided plenty of velvety, rich smoke, and the burn was consistent throughout. In terms of flavour the main characteristics were a savoury woodiness and mild sweet spice, accompanied by a note of cocoa. Overall I found this a delightful smoke and I'm planning to get a few more, but I'll be sure to let them sit in the humidor for a while before I start on them.

I've never personally understood why Cohiba are right at the top of the food chain. I have tried two of them and was impressed by neither. They are nice enough, but are easily trumped in my book by many other cigars of lower cost. Of the two i tried, i very much prefer the Maduro 5 Secretos.
