H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and all H. Upmann sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

SIR WINSTON #5 Best Cigar of 2018 - Cigar Aficionado

A magnificent churchill that, when purchased as one, comes in a beautiful varnished box, a fact that does not escape the manufacturers, who put every effort into making cigars that live up to their presentation for connoisseurs.

Tasting Notes

Generous and strong, it has all the virtues of the Habano with pedigree. Excellent draw and burn. Very smooth and consistent.

92 / 100

"Sweet and floral first puffs lead to an elegant procession of caramel, vanilla honey and pistachio notes. Complex with an even draw and burn...."

This is not the Churchill you would expect from R&J, but a nice effort nonetheless. Mild at first, then nicely developing to full medium. Definite notes of wood and leather tightly packed inside an excellent wrapper. Decent draw and good construction. written by Mihai

Not the richest tasting Churchill out there but a treat nonetheless. Some inconsistency in the draw. The good ones are awesome! written by JM USA

Have to agree with Michael, a one dimensional smoke. Maybe I just prefer a stronger flavour. This, to me, was a light smoke, with too easy a draw. Not very rich or heavy. Maybe more of a daytime cigar. But then Im an evening smoker, with a glass or two of red, so... Not bad really, just not for me. written by David M Smith
