H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and all H. Upmann sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

MAJESTIC

An inexpensive cigar for its size, the majestic projects an image well above its price bracket. The taste is somewhat more intense than many H. Upmanns, but if you know what you are buying, you will be rewarded.

Tasting Notes

A balanced flavour with a toasty tobacco taste. I would recommend ageing this cigar for around 5 years.

"Squarely pressed with a reddish-brown wrapper, this corona imparts a nutty and woody smoke with hints of leather and licorice, but leaves an ashy aftertaste..."

After going through the ordeal of being retired on health grounds I haven decided to spend my time enjoying cigars, while my health alliows me. Both my late grandfather’s smoked pipes and used to give me the occasional King Edward cigar. I always found them bitter and put me off. On my 21st Birthday I was given a box of Havana’s that I remember enjoying at the time. Thanks to Callum’s (Chester’ shop) YouTube recommendation saying the H Upmann Majestic is a “anytime cigar” I ordered 3 to try. No bitterness at all and easy to smoke right down to the final half inch. A have a new hobby!!

A very well constructed cigar. Draw was perfect, not to tight and not to loose. It was quite creamy wich is my favorite, it also had hints of wood and was nutty. I would have expected a better burn but its not every day you find a cuban long filler hand rolled cigar for this amazing price. Exelent value and i would recomend this as a first cigar.

Very enjoyable. I smoked this while reading a book and it was a perfect compliment to such. Perfect draw, just a little resistance as you'd like and a great burn. The Majestic is very flavourful but isn't particularly complex, however you don't always want that, with a box of these you'd know what to expect. In the first third it was quite mild with a nutty, woody taste. In the second third it built upon these flavours and became slightly more rich with leathery notes appearing and a little sweetness; in the final third this rich leather and woodiness was even more pronounced with coffee flavours becoming noticeable. In the final couple of inches I did notice a little bitterness but I put this down to the cigar being young. Overall, a fantastic smoke for the price and is one I will definitely be returning to.

5* and the reason I hold this cigar in such high regard, is the fact that you would struggle to find any cigar for such a low price with this amount of flavour. With a smooth and enjoyable taste Best enjoyed in my eyes with a nice coffee. Being abit of a newbie this cigar was suggested to me by the instore staff at the Chester branch, I have to say I was not disappointed; the staff are warm and welcoming and are always happy to help.

This cigar was plugged around the band area so I poked a hole from the head and it did sort out the draw though it was still a little tighter than perfect and did cause some tunnelling later on but nothing too bad.The first third was light with Nutty and cedar, second third a sweetness started to develop and I got hints of milk chocolate. Stayed smooth throughout. Nutty and tangy with earth coming in for the final third. Into the final third there was a floral earthy taste which must be that classic Upman 'olive' taste. Though if I hadn't have read about it I probably wouldn't have been able to put my finger on it. Got slightly spicy towards the end. Had it in my humidor for about 5 months but I think another 6 months would have helped bring out the more subtle chcolatly sweetness more. Burn was uneven but was correctable. In conclusion this was a little rougher than I would expect but I am putting that down to youth. I will be buying more to put away for a few years as these have a lot of potential and are good value
