H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and all H. Upmann sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

MAGNUM 50

Piloted as one of the highly successful 2005 Edicion Limitades, the Magnum 50 entered the range as a standard size in 2008. A big cigar, just over six inches in length, that deliver a rounded, mellow flavour and aroma.

Tasting Notes

89 / 100

"Solidly rolled with a triple cap and flat head. A tart, berry-like quality meets a brown sugar sweetness which combines with molasses notes for a holiday fruitcake effect before the boozy, rum-barrel finish. The combustion is slow and cool, while the draw remains even..."

The H. Upmann Magnum 50 Tubed felt like a really classic Cuban experience for me. Right from the start, there was that signature smoothness—cedar, light spice, and a creamy texture that made it very approachable. The draw was just right, offering a steady flow of aromatic smoke. Flavor-wise, it had a nice balance of wood, earth, and a touch of nuttiness. About halfway through, I noticed a floral note along with some sweetness that kept things interesting. The burn line wasn’t perfect, but it corrected itself without much effort. What stood out most was how refined it felt—everything was in harmony, with no harshness or bitterness. Compared to some of the stronger Nicaraguan smokes I’ve tried, this felt more subtle and elegant, though still full of character. By the final third, the flavors deepened, with more earth and spice, but it never lost its smoothness. This cigar gave me a real sense of Cuban tradition and why brands like H. Upmann are so respected. I’d definitely keep a few of these on hand for when I want something classic and dependable. Rating: 8/10
