H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and all H. Upmann sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

MAGNUM 46

This cabinet selection cigar tied in a silk ribboned bundle first saw the light of day in the mid 1980s. It revitalised the traditional image of the brand with its elegant light to medium taste in a girth that rewards the palate.

Tasting Notes

Very complex and creamy, a really good daytime smoke as it is not too strong but has lovely subtle woody flavours. A true pleasure to smoke.

"The draw is a bit firm, but still imparts toasty notes of walnut and vanilla wrapped around a solid core of dried fruit and wood. It burns evenly at a slow, cool rate..."

Reviews are personal and I know this cigar generally gets good reviews but I was not that impressed. Don't know if I got a bad one or not but didn't really enjoy it. Construction was not great, wrapper had started to peel a bit. Cut was not clean and again wrapper started to peel a little. Taste, it was ok - the first 1/3 was enjoyable but I found it a bit harsh beyond half way. Not great, but not not bad. I will probably get another just to try and see if its better second time round.

Wow! What a cigar! From the magnificent presentation of the cigar itself with its finely rolled outer shell, double golden labels, triple cap, to its sparklingly aroma of creamy chocolate and coffee. The length and gauge is just perfect, which reflects the overall taste! The draw was not too easy and not too strenuous, with the ideal amount of white smoke being bellowed out. The construction is well packed and holds itself even towards the final 1/3 of the cigar! The ash holds for around 2cm. The taste as I said is wonderful, with it starting off a little strong on the palette but eventually mellows down to a medium roast of chocolate and coffee. It took 80 minutes to smoke this bad boy, and boy was it worth it!

Very nice smoke, with a very distinctive change of flavours from light to spicy as it gets going.
