H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

HALF CORONA

Introduced in 2011 the Half Corona is the first 3 1/2 inch Havana to be introduced since the Second World War. Previously called the Half-a-Corona, it was in its day the best selling Havana size.

Tasting Notes

This cigar is creamy with hints of coffee. Small attractive Havana, good draw with complex flavours for such a small cigar. An excellent short smoking break cigar.

90 / 100

"A short corona that burns slowly and draws well, loading the palate with lots of cedary, fruity notes as well as a hint of cinnamon and a peppery finish..."

Perfect build and smart size for the glass of brandy. The taste however is not for everyone. Certainly not for the beginners. Give it four.

Ive slowly been trying numerous cigars (from very expensive and large to small) from various websites sampler selections for some time and have finally settled on these. The length of smoke suits my once in a while on a warm summers night by the fire approach and they often get smoked over 2 nights which is great.I won't go into the notes and flavours of these or any other cigars as I think it's a bit ott to describe some of the notes that people feel they need to attach to the experience of what is essentially a ton of tobacco.Lets just say that like any cigar you can get good and bad ones on the draw but they taste as good as any I've tried. They are up there with the usual suspects from Cuba. I think ultimately we we all need to find a brand to stick with and these are mine.

The Upmann half corona is a all time favourite of mine, full of great flavours and is often paired with a coffee which complements one another beautifully. I have always recommended these cigars not just on their guaranteed creamy flavours but also as a good short time smoke(around 20min) I often add these on my order as my humidor wouldn't be complete without them.

I bought these as they were recommended to me when on holiday in Cuba by an English chap in the Conde de Villanueva hotel. The size put me off back then which I have to admit was as a result of inexperience. As I assumed the better cigars would have to be the bigger ones. Oh how I was wrong. I bought the 5 tin pack to test as my 'in between cigars' cigar (hope that makes sense) because I didn't want to keep cutting my cigars off half way due to having to stand outside to smoke. This is a stunning cigar, the smoke is nice and thick and gives you plenty of time to consider its flavours. Smooth subtle honey and a touch of coffee make this little number a really pleasurable smoke which lasts me over 30mins still new to smoking cigars but I truly had a eureka moment with this one. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
