H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and all H. Upmann sizes are ‘tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

NO. 2

A magnificent churchill that, when purchased as a box, comes in a beautifully varnished box, a fact that does not escape the manufacturers who put every effort into making cigars that live up to their presentation for connoisseurs.

Tasting Notes

Magnificent draw and combustion. A great Habano, only for real enthusiasts. This cigar has a great balance of flavour and spice. A great smoke.

98/ 100

" It may not have been blended for strength, but smoking this cigar is a fully engaging experience with a room-filling aroma and mouth-filling texture that allows one to luxuriate in its layers of nutmeg, cinnamon and salted peanut flavor, all of which intensify, while, at the same time, showing a delicate floral quality that adds superb balance in a way that no other cigar this year could..."

Firstly,a beautiful thing to look at.Perfectly constructed,a wonderful chocolate coloured wrapper with a lovely, oily sheen. It really did look good enough to eat! Sweet and mild pre-light flavours. The first third was a very mild and light bodied smoke with an absolute multitude of flavours coming through, sweet coffee, cream, some chocolate and vanilla in there also and much more besides I'm sure, just so full of flavour.Into the second third and it developed very markedly into much more defined woody, leather and spice flavours with just a slight peppery finish. The final third and not so spicy anymore, definitely medium bodied and the sweetness was back with those truly wonderful toasted Cuban tobacco flavours.A thick and very chewy smoke and the aroma coming off this cigar was absolutely magnificent the whole way down, and a perfect combustion.I'm sure there has been so much more in this cigar that I've not been able to define, especially in the final third. This has been a really wonderful smoke and a great way to spend the best part of a couple of hours on an early weekend afternoon. My own personal experience with cigars has been that the one I smoke ROTT upon delivery usually gives me a pretty good idea of what's to come and I know that I now need to give these at least a month or two to rest and get used to my humidor before smoking another but it's not gonna be easy in this case!!

This is a full body cigar with a very nice earthy/spice draw to it even though this one is a little tightly wraped i cant complain this is just so much better than anything that i have prevouisly smoked and must reccomend this cigar to everyone out there. So what are you waiting for pop down to your local shopn or just order them here(cheaper than my local. To end this off i must just say again this is a truly magnificent cigar. written by zach
