REGIUS

Regius Cigars Ltd was founded in 2010 by a small group of cigar enthusiasts in London. They entered a partnership with the leading cigar manufacturers of Cuban descent, based in the northern mountains of Nicaragua, employing over 500 cigar rollers. They produce elegant, hand-made cigars the old fashioned way with modern technology and advanced, innovative cultural methods.

Since conception, Regius Cigars have been highly credited by the world’s leading cigar-related journals and commentators, particularly Cigar Aficianado Magazine which recently rated Regius in their top 25 cigar brands on sale in the USA.

Every Regius cigar is individually checked before leaving the factory ensuring consistency of draw and construction. The Regius blend has been particularly well received by a new generation of hand-made cigar aficionados who favour a smooth and easy, yet complex, smoke.

CONNECTICUT

Connecticut seed wrapper grown in the Talanga valley in Honduras.

Most Connecticut wrappers are from Ecuador - they look nice but lack much of the depth and complexity needed in a premium cigar. In the US, Connecticut cigars have a reputation for being very mild and boring yet inoffensive. This cigar was made to have complexity and flavour displaying the best out of the wrapper tobacco. More on that below.

Featuring a Talanga wrapper because it exhibits the best of Connecticut seed Tobacco. The floral delicate tones, the creamy texture without the harshness or the finish of other varietals of Nicaraguan or much new world Tobacco. It has flavour without the acidity and sourness of other types of Connecticut tobacco.

It’s a Connecticut with flavour, not a cigar to smoke when you need something in your hand. A cigar that surprises people when they smoke it - surprises them that a Connecticut cigar can have that much flavour and complexity and still be acceptable strength wise to the “usual” Connecticut smoker.

For a “gran toro” size, it’s decent value for money. I’ve had the “grandido” before and found it a brilliant smoke for a Churchill size. This was OK, but it had a very ‘powdery’, ashy burn to it, which let it down a bit, and gave it a dry taste. That said, it burned evenly and lasted as long as you’d expect; getting on for two hours. For a few quid more, I’d go for the Brickhouse “Mighty Mighty” instead in future.

Only bought the one cigar. 58x6.5” Connecticut wrapper. Cigar initially looked good. Before toasting/lighting it was obvious that there were a few cracks and splits near the foot. Parts of the wrapper were cracked along the length of the body. On the whole the build was poor. Upon removing the band some of the wrapper peeled away leaving a fault in the outer construction. The cigar was overly dry and needed to stay in the humidor for quite a while before it was anywhere near close to being ready to smoke. The head of the cigar was brittle and practically disintegrated upon punch cutting. Whilst smoking the filler of the cigar continued to shed tobacco flakes leaving an unpleasant mouth feel. The burn was reasonable until it hit the peeling sections of wrapper. Sadly I wouldn’t recommend based on this cigar alone. Taste wise it was robust and peppery. Sweet aftertaste on the draw however due to the state of the cigar it was unpleasant. Not recommended based on this one cigar. Bearing in mind that I only ordered one cigar it could be that I was unlucky. However as the cigar was hand picked and packaged it would seem that this is possibly typical. I would recommend spending a few extra pounds and get an Oliva Serie V Churchill extra or a Montecristo 2. At least that way you are guaranteed to get a cigar that will deliver a pleasant fulfilling smoke. Shame. I had hope for these. Thanks for reading. Happy herfing

Just smoked my first one. Probably a bit bland for my taste, but good burn throughout. 2 hour smoke. Great value.
