Rafael Gonzalez was created in the 1930's.

It was in this brand that the 6 1/2 inch by 42 gauge cigar, which has the factory name of Cervantes, was the first called a Lonsdale after Lord Lonsdale, the famous English sporting Earl and cigar aficionado of that period. Now many other brands use the name as well.

On its lid label each box carries a curious inscription written in English to the effect that the cigars should be smoked within one month of the date of shipment from Havana or otherwise they should be carefully matured for about one year.

Rafael Gonzalez cigars contain a light tasting blend of filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Tasting Notes

Mild in aroma and flavour, best after a light summer lunch. The construction is very good and the draw is excellent, all a good representation of what a mild cuban should be.

89 / 100

"...A box-pressed little smoke with a gritty wrapper and three-seam cap. Dry walnut and leather notes become lighter with touches by balsa wood, hay and flowers..."

I don't know if I'm being biased as this is the first Cuban I tried, but it is my favourite. I've tried other mild to medium Cubans, but this cigar has more flavour and aroma than most. I've not had one that I found disappointing. If you have to settle for a single cigar, this is it.

A nice cinnamon taste to start, growing stronger as you smoke it down. Complex flavors of spice develop, sweet and strong. Excellent draw, lots of smoke and strong finish. written by Michael

Well knock me down with a feather. Im not usually a light cigar fan but this was very nice. There was enough flavour for an afternoon smoke in the sunshine to keep my interested. Subtle and fragrant cedar and little leather. Yes, well worth trying to see if it floats your boat. written by Asgard
